Design SIG
|
This special interest group is for those people who are familiar with computer operation and file management, and who want to learn techniques that can be applied to website design. If you have or want a personal website at your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you will find our meetings beneficial. We are primarily using the FrontPage Express web page editor. One major goal is to help maintain the Senior Center website, including the Computer Club website. You are welcome to attend our meeting to see if this group is right for you. We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 9 to 11 AM in the Computer Lab.
| A blog is a weblog page made up of usually short, frequently updated posts that are arranged chronologically. The Blogger software gives you a way to automate (and greatly accelerate) the log publishing process. As an example, see Life on the Ice that chronicles a seal survey trip to Antartica, and has some great pictures. There is an interesting blog from a twenty-something Arab who lives in Baghdad. Salam Pax gives a secular point of view on current life in Iraq. He started publishing in December of 2002. | ![]() |

This SIG formed after a class in web page design was held in the spring and summer of 2002. A summary of the topics covered can be seen here.
Picture Dimentions vs. File Size

JavaScript
JavaScript can preload images for use with buttons, mouse-overs, slide shows, and other things to be determined depending on the interest of the members. The next major section below has several examples of web pages using JavaScript.
Web Page Design Using Tables
One good way of organizing your web page is to use tables. Tables can be done with borders to emphasize things, such as the yellow box at the top of this page. Tables can be used without borders to provide places to put blocks of text. An example developed at our SIG meeting shows the use of tables within tables.
Use of Power Point was demonstrated and the members developed several shows for the Senior Center Open House in September 2002. See an example of an image.
The SC website is sophisticated as it uses advanced techniques that are relevant to keeping a large site looking consistent. However, to keep the site pages current does not require a deep knowledge of web page design. Some of the SIG members have taken responsibility for pages of clubs that would benifit by having up to date information posted.
The links below are to pages that were generated by SIG members.
