Old Man's Whiskers, Prairie Smoke and Purple Avens are common names for Geum triflorum.

This specimen was photographed in the Olympic National Park, at the top of the Hurricane Ridge Trail.

The flowers hang downward on the stem and are not very accessible to photographers, even those lying flat on the ground. The mature seed heads turn upward so that the seeds may readily be released by the wind or following disturbance by large mammals.

Wind can create havoc for photographers interested in G. triflorum seed heads!
