Young coho salmon collected from Deer Creek during a volunteer streamside planting project. One of the volunteers filling a bucket to water a newly planted tree captured this fry which was gleefully observed by all present before being released back into the creek.

The volunteer planting effort in Whatcom County, Washington, is part of the long term plan to improve salmon habitat in the upper left hand corner of Washington. The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) sponsored this project on Deer Creek, and contiunes to be the most active player in volunteer stream improvement projects in the county. To get involved in habitat improvement projects check out their web site: www.n-sea.org or contact the volunteer coordinator at: nsea@nas.com.
