Pre-dawn eruption of the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica. This image was captured around 5 AM while the photographer was perched on a wooden observation platform with a tape recorder and stopwatch. The local howler monkeys began their morning chorus shortly after the explosive kaboom. On a scale of 1 to 10, this eruption was about 6 which means that the platform shook during the time exposure necessary to capture the photo. A full darkness photo of another Arenal eruption is shown in the header, where the tripod was on solid ground for the exposure. More information about Arenal can be found in the story Under the Volcano.
