Breeding Just One Litter? |
In order to better ensure the health of our cats and kittens, we do not offer stud service.
Sarsenstone Cattery also does not sell breeding cats to the general public. We sell breeding cats very rarely and only to people we know well. Breeders and people who want to breed get to know each other through breed clubs, cat fancy listservs, attending cat shows, and so on. Those are also organizations and activities that help wannabe breeders educate themselves. We want to see that breeders to whom we sell have demonstrated repeatedly by actions, not just words, that they will be highly ethical, knowledgable breeders who above all love the breed and the individual cats.
We have heard the same spiel countless times from various people who contact us wanting us to provide them with a mate for a "Siamese" already in their home, a cat that they bought elsewhere and know nothing about. It's almost certainly a cat that shouldn't be bred—has falsified papers, is not a genuine Siamese, carries genetic defects, or is from a very over-used bloodline. A breeder who understood the responsibility of breeding would not have sold a breeding cat to a stranger just for the money or based on a few conversations. There are plenty of homeless cats in the world already because of people who didn't do right by them.
Those who want to do things the right way should join a good breed club, find a mentor in that breed club, learn about genetics and pedigrees, learn how to work with other breeders to maintain an adequate breed gene pool, learn about early neuter, and learn the ins and outs of registries and their rules before ever buying the first breeding cat. Those are actions that say more for a wannabe breeder than words ever will.
If you want to learn more about ethical breeding, visit the appropriate pages on the Purebred Cat Rescue site and the PREOSSIA site. See also information on this site about the costs of responsible breeding and the homeless cat problem.
