Q: What is the difference between Swedish massage and Shiatsu massage?
A: Swedish massage based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology and employs the traditional manipulative techniques of effleurage, petrissage, vibration, friction, and tapotement. Shiatsu massage, Japanese style, a finger pressure method, is based on the Oriental concept that the body has a series of energy (tsubo) points. When pressure is properly applied to these points, circulation is improved and nerves are stimulated. Shiatsu is said to improve body metabolism and to relieve a number of physical disorders.
