sterling sylvia

second year at university,
first day
and i sat on the steps,
bored with
the first-year faces
passing
fast on their way to class -
shining full of expectation
and yet so hesitantly dull.
then,
there you were,
with your funny
knickerbockers
and your cap jauntily askew,
seeming to saunter
so confidently, casually
through all the usual taboos.
one look at your
kaleidoscope jacket
and i knew you'd be my soul-mate -
that we were,
somehow,
fated.

later i saw you,
crying
at the back of the bus
and wondering why,
ignored the wide,empty seats
to choose the one beside you.
looking back i think that
that was the beginning of us,
the kindling of our off-beat kinship/
forever-friendship,
my sterling silverfish,
long-wished-for sibling-sis.

now unswimmable oceans divide us
and husbands and children
have placed apart
our once inseparable hearts
and i wish the world
was just a little smaller,
not so far unfurled
because this side of the sea,
my sister,
missing you,

i miss a big part of me.
sterling sylvia - song

first time i saw you
next time you cried
was clear before me
you'd be by my side

sterling sylvia
sterling child
sterling sylvia
so wild

last time i saw you
you had mellowed mild
husband there for you
baby by your side

but i remember we were twins
so tight none could come between
now you are gone
and how i miss you...

sterling sylvia
sterling child
sterling sylvia
so wild

next time i see you
we'll be side by side
can't wait to see you
wish this world weren't so wide

cos i remember we were twins
so tight none could come between
now you are gone
and how i miss you...

sterling sylvia
sterling child
sterling sylvia
so wild

sterling sylvia
silver sprite
sterling sylvia
so bright
