drugstore poem
standing in the check-out line,
i watch people in the aisles;
a harried couple
with between each other,
miles,
yet over there
a young girl, smiling,
leans into the boy beside her,
their bodies yearning
for each other still
like lungs for air.
"enjoy this," i think
as i surreptitiously stare.
strange that later,
as the years divide,
how rare...
