accidents

i saw an accident one afternoon while riding the bus home from school and this observation was the result (note the teen similes!) i'd always had a very graphic image for it in my head which i wanted someone to draw for me, a la the characters in the beatles anthology, but i could never find someone to do it, so i finally made my own attempt. it's nothing like my orginal concept, but i like it well enough...
the second poem is about another accident, 16 years later, again in april! so, these are observations through my then teen, now adult (sort of), eyes.

Thoughts after an accident
10 april 1981

How frail the human body is!
Along comes a truck
(man-made!)
and we lie sprawled,
hugging the earth with
our broken bones,
rudely splitting open
like over-ripe tomatoes
to spill our lives
onto the
barren and unyielding
ground.

observation
april 97

burnt ashes
in the road,
like a love once desired....
police remove
the yellow lines,
while the flares -
burning pyres
amidst the siren-wails -
expire.
