Mackinac
Island 2001
In
2001, I went to the Mackinaw area (of Michigan) for a few days with
my Mom and some of my Becker relatives. These are some of the photos
and stories from my trip.

29, 2001: Mackinac Island
We
spent our first full day of vacation on Mackinac Island. It was
hot, but the Island is beautiful and charming as ever. They don't
allow cars (except an ambulance) on the island, so folks get around
on foot, with bikes, or with horses. And, there is beautiful landscaping
and picket fences all over the Island.

| The
Butterfly House on Mackinac Island
500
butterflies flutter around, seemingly choreographed to classical
music playing over loud speakers. Here are three of my favorite
photos:

The
Grand Hotel
It's
kind of too large to capture in one photograph, but here's the right
and left halves of the porch. This is the longest porch in the world.
Keep in mind as you look at the photo that "as far as the eye
can see" is actually only halfway down the length of the porch!

30: Relaxing in Mackinaw City
I
love water. I enjoy walking in large bodies of water, such as our
Great Lakes, the oceans, and the Gulf of Mexico. Our lake levels
are at almost record lows, so I was able to walk quite far into
the water and still only be shin deep. I spent time every day walking
in or near the water. Ahhhhhh!

On
our last night in the area, we were treated to some gorgeous skies
-- deep oranges, yellows, and pinks in the sunset.
A
gorgeous sunset over the lakes (left) and behind the Mackinac Bridge
which spans the straits between our peninsulas.
