Quotes from a Dance Article in the National Geographic in July 2006, article
by Cathy Newman
Before the written word,
humans spoke the language of dance.
It’s friendship set to music. To dance is human.
Take music, add movement, and great things happen.
We pour out love and hate, joy and sorrow. We appeal to the spirits, god,
and nature; we flirt, seduce, court; celebrate birth, death, and everything in between.
We even presume to reorder our worlds as if
turning and turning we come round right.
We dance to internal rhythms and external sounds.
We dance, not just with our bodies, but from the heart.
Dance is bodies sounding off.
Dance is so profane, some religions ban it,
so sacred, others claim it.
We dance out of anguish, to attain solace,
and many times in with hopes to heal.
Dance, like the rhythm of a beating heart, is life.
It is, also, the space between heartbeats.
Dance embraces the breadth and depth
of what it means to be human.
Dance is a creative alternative to express aggression,
with out the violence, and the hurt it creates.
Dance is a creative alternative to expressing sadness and grief,
with out the drinking, drugs, or suicide attempts.
Dance is passion and consolation.
It gets deep down in your heart.
When you’re in a bad mood,
dancing brings forth new reservoirs of joy and laugher.
