Dave Bowlus has taught sailing at Schock Boats in Newport Beach, CA, at the UC Berkeley recreational sailing program, at Harbor Sailboats in San Diego, and at Harvard School (now Harvard-Westlake, a private secondary school in Los Angeles.) As a teenager he worked for his local YMCA as a lifeguard and day-camp counselor. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as Operations Officer aboard an 180-foot buoy tender in Alaska and as Assistant Chief of Boating Safety for the Fifth Coast Guard District (mid-Atlantic United States).

Dave has been sailing since childhood. Originally taught by his father, he subsequently gained knowledge and experience in sailing, and in teaching sailing, from many other thoughtful people who love to sail. He has sailed for fun and in races at the college and inter-club levels. Experienced in boats small and large, he most enjoys sailing in dinghies, a generic name for small, easy-to-handle, highly responsive boats.

Dave moved to Los Osos in 2003 after having retired from teaching biology at a Los Angeles area community college. He previously taught life science and biology (as well as sailing) at the junior high and high school level.

He founded Sail Away Camp  in the summer of 2005 and is looking forward to its fifth year.  Usually a camp session takes place in June, but June 2009 contained no mornings with enough water in the back bay for sailing.  Mornings are when winds are lightest and best for new sailors, so the 2009 camps are scheduled for July and August.
