"LIFEGUARD 'HANK' POWELL DIES OF HEART ATTACK AT 37"
Funeral services will be held today for Henry "Hank" Harrison Powell III, a well-known and respected Long Beach lifeguard and marine inspector.
Powell collapsed and died of a heart attack Sunday while playing basketball at Whaley Park in Long Beach. He was 37 years old.
Today's services will be at 11:30 a.m. at Brothers Mortuary, 244 Redondo Ave., Long Beach. Interment will be private.
Powell was a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was raised in Long Beach, where he graduated from St. Anthony High School. He graduated from USC in 1970 and five years later received a law degree form the University of Santa Clara.
Powell joined the Long Beach lifeguard service in 1967. He first was an hourly lifeguard, then a Marine Safety Officer (a permant lifeguard), a Marine Safety Boat Operator with bay and oceanfront patrol and rescue duties. He later became a Marine Safety Sergeant supervising lifeguards and making rescues, and then a Marine Inspector, a supervisorial position in security operations.
Summers he continued to work as a Marine Safety Sergeant.
Powell was a founder of the Marine Patrol Officers Association and took part in the lifeguards' water safety programs in public schools.
His athletic interests included dory racing and basketball.
Powell is survived by his wife Dorothy Powell, their son, Michael, and mother Martha Powell.
