Chapter 1 - Early Years

Sioux City, Iowa 1935-1952

I was born in Sioux City, Iowa as an only child and grew up attending Bryant Elementary School, North Junior High School, and Central High School, from which I graduated in 1952. During this time I lived briefly in Red Oak, Iowa and Mason City, Iowa during the second and third grade, before returning to Sioux City. I played a lot of sandlot sports and have always loved sports, but I was too small to play varsity sports. I was less than five feet tall till my Junior year in high school and was only 5'-6" and 110 lbs. when I graduated. (I'm now about 5'-9" and around 200 lbs.). I did earn two varsity letters as student manager of the football team. The friends I had growing up continue to be my best friends as we keep in touch despite being spread all over the country.
