you will find
on the tops of mountains

Welcome to my Web site
My name is Ry Brown.
I've had the great good fortune to meet and work with many remarkable teachers.
I've been a musician for over 40 years, performing on such instruments as sitar, sarod, violin and guitar.
Thanks to the digital revolution, producing and selling my own CDs has become my "cottage industry".
Whatever path you follow, I offer you this music in the hope that it will serve you well.

Studies show that
music has profound positive effects
on our physical, mental
and emotional health
. . . and while no studies have compared the effects of modal to harmonic music, research seems to suggest that the right
music can help us relax, increase our intelligence, improve the quality of our sleep . . . the list goes on.
Since ancient times
the power of modal music
to soothe and uplift
has been known to many cultures from the Far East to the British Isles and beyond. People who hear it today often report phenomena
ranging from a profound sense of peace to "waking dreams" and other altered states of consciousness.
The principles
for performing such music
have been lost
almost completely in the Western world today. In fact, most Westerners have probably never heard such music.
Zen in the Art of Guitar
makes this music
available to modern listeners
who use this CD as "musical incense" during healing work, spiritual practices or other activities. Does this music have special
properties? Experiment and decide for yourself.

Modal music has disappeared
almost completely from today's Western world due to the prevalence of music based on harmonic progression and well-tempered
intonation.
Modal music is
based entirely upon melody
in that it does not employ chord changes or harmonic progression, freeing the soloist to create emphasis or resolution on
any scale tone.
A typical concert
features the use of
a single tonic note
and relies on various colorful scales to create variety. In addition, a kharaj--or drone--is either sounded or implied. When
drums or percussion are used they are tuned to the kharaj.
Microtonal adjustments
are made to
the intonation of each scale tone
resulting in a more natural intonation and a deeper consonance.
