Unzipping A File

What is UnZipping a File?

Zipping a File means that a file has been compressed. There are different compression techniques, but basically the software that zipped the file has found repeated patterns or empty space in the file and kept track of this with a kind of shortcut notation in a way that allows the file to be saved in a smaller amount of space. So, what good is zipping a file?
  1. It saves file space. It can be stored in a smaller amount of space. For example, a file that will not fit on a 3 1/2" disk before it is zipped, might fit after it is zipped.
  2. If the file has been zipped and you are downloading it, it will download more quickly, because it isn't so big.
A file cannot be used in its zipped form, so before you can use the file it has to be unzipped, that is, it is put back the way it was originally (without all the shortcut notation). If it is a zipped file, that is, if it has a file extension of .ZIP or .zip, then you must 1st unzip the file before opening it. If you don't already have an UnZip program, you would need to download it.
