The Dayton Complex presented Patricia Jones, Special Olympics rep., a check for $13,400. We would like to thank Michelle Burnette (2nd Shift officer at Plane) and Lillie Fontenot (intake personnel) for running the Special Olympics run. The run began in Houston and ended in Dallas.

Wow, what dedication these two have! Also, they volunteered at the Special Olympic games in Dallas. Ms. Burnette also sold tons of Special Olympics shirts, which helped tremendously with our fund-raising. Thans again, you two, for going that extra mile in more ways than one!

Health Fair

The second annual Health Fair for Summer Enrollment took place on July 18. There were lots of fun things, baby photo contest, door prizes and staff even got to get a massage!

The Health Fair was said to be “very organized and informative.” Thanks to all those who took the time to attend and especially to all those who donated blood!

Congratulations

Chaplain Gloria Siller was named Non-Security Employee of the Year during the wardens meeting in Corpus Christi last month. This is quite an honor for her and her fellow co-workers at the Dayton Complex.

Leticia Contreras, Purchaser II for the Commissary Eepartment, was honored with the Million $$ award. She was also chosen as the “Top Gun” FY ‘98. Great job, Commissary!

Security Employee of the Month

COIII D. Welch has been selected as Security Employee of the Month for July at Plane State Jail.

Officer Welch began her employment with TDCJ and the Plane State Jail in February 1998, when she was assigne to 3rd Shift, and then alter moved to 1st Shift.

In October 1999, Officer Welch was selected as the alternate grievance officer, where she now works. Officer Welch is reponsible and a dedicated emplyoee who always conducts herself in a professional manner.

On June 10, while working visitation and conducting vehicle searches, Officer Welch discovered a significant amount of drugs in at least two vehicles belonging to visitors.

She promptly alerted staff and the Libery County Sheriff’s Department was called, leading to the arrest of both visitors. Officer Welch should be commended for a job well done and is currently deserving of Security

Non-Security Employee of the Month.

Ms. Michelle Adaway has been selected as the Non-Security Employee of the Month for July at Plane State Jail.

Ms. Adaway began her employment with the Plane Unit in December 1995 as a clerk in the countroom.

She later transferred into security as a correctional officer and went to the Woodman Unit in Gatesville.

In January 1999, Ms. Adaway returned to the Plane Unit and went to work in the Intake Deparment in photo and ID.

Ms. Adaway is very conscientious of duties assigned to her and completes these duties with minimal supervision. She conducts herself in a professional manner, yet her witty personality keeps the department in high spirits. She is a tremendous asset to the Intake Department as well as the agency as a whole. Ms. Adaway is well deserving of Non-Security Employee of the Month.

Condolences

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have lost someone dear to the: R. Haupt, who lost his grandfather and grandmother, and T. Banks, who lost her grandmother. Our hearts are with you at this very sad time.

We also wish S. Black (1st Shift) a speedy recovery. Officer Black is a real trouper; she is fighting breast cancer. She is going through chemotherapy and is at home. A prime example of a real trouper is the fact that Officer Black let her grandchildren shave her head before starting the chemo treatments, this way he grandchildren wouldn’t get scared when she lost her hair. This is the officer I know — always has a good, caring spirit about others and a sense of humor you can’t beat. We miss you, Ms. Black, and we are behind you all the way.

Also to all those who are out on extended sick leave, we wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you soon

Don’t Forget

Aug. 4-6 there will be a tax break on all those school items (no tax). So, if you’re off those days, shop, shop and shop!
