In July 1999, T. Don Hutto Correctional Center held a fund-raising golf
tournament to raise money for Howard Fitzwater, case manager at Hutto.
He was diagnosed with leukemia in December 1998.
Mr. Fitzwater retired from the military in 1993 and came
to work for CCA-T. Don Hutto Correctional Center in December 1996 as a
correctional officer.
Some of his accomplishments include being promoted to
lieutenant in June 1997, promoted to case manager in September 1999 and
served as Assistant Sort Team Commander.
The golf tournament raised $3,900, and $1,000 was donated
to the National Leukemia Association, while $2,900 went to Mr. Fitzwater
to help cover medical expenses.
Mr. Fitzwater told us that the money has been put in a
special savings account for his medical costs.
Mr. Fitzwater needs a bone marrow transplant to survive
and is waiting on an answer from Fred Hutchins Cancer Research Hospital
in Seattle, Wash., about a possible donor.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Fitzwater and his family.
