On June 9, the George Beto Unit Post Trauma Team in conjunction with
all units statewide sponsored a Universal Memorial Service for the fallen
officers from TDCJ-ID and TDCJ-SJD. The program followed the same format
as the main program in Huntsville. The program on the unit opened with
a welcome from Senior Warden R.E. Thompson to the staff. Chaplain Larry
Gardner gave the invocation. Other speakers included the warden, with Danny
Horton, Debra Pickle, Paul McClendon, Capt. Delton Atwood and Sgt. Lowell
Clay, who all gave special honor to the fallen officers gone but
not forgotten. During the special event a moment of silence was taken,
followed by the sounding of the unit horn in harmony with the Gurney Unit.
Following the ceremony, all in attendance were treated with refreshments,
provided by unit employees. A special thank you goes to Warden Thompson
for allowing employees to attend this momentous occasion during the peak
time of the units operation.

On July 13, the George Beto Unit held an Officers Appreciation Day to
honor the correctional staff. The administrative staff stayed up late preparing
brisket and chicken. Food Service prepared all the trimmings. The feast
was served by Warden Thompson, Warden Horton, Maj. Pratt, Maj. Castillo
and J.Y. Walker. We appreciate all the hard work that our correctional
officers have done to pick up the slack during this time of short staffing.
