Tango - that's lace!

What is "lacing" or "penciling"?  That was one of my first questions when I began reading about all the different colors that runners can be.  I'm still not sure that I use the words correctly.  I think "lacing" is used to describe feathers that have a darker outer edge and "penciling" is used to describe feathers that have a lighter outer edge.  Also, the center vein of the feather usually matches the accent color of the outer edge.  Some sources seem to use the terms interchangeably.  So have I defined them correctly?  Don't know.  What I do know, is that a blue runner with good lacing is a thing of beauty.  And the penciling of the pencileds and the grey(mallard) color is also quite captivating.
