I have only dealt with three sources of mail-order waterfowl since I have had ducks.  Below are the ones I would recommend based on my personal experience living in central Virginia.

NEW for 2007 - Holderread's has a website!!! (still under construction) (click here to open their site in a new browser window)

From March through June, they say it is best to call Wed. through Sat., 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Pacific Time).  Millie Holderread is always pleasant and helpful.  And Wanita, who generally answers the emails, is wonderful as well.

The quality of their birds is known world-wide.  Outstanding.

Runners may be ordered by color in black, blue,  fawn and white, gray(mallard), penciled and white.

They also sell a Deluxe Runner Assortment that can include not only the standard colors but also the following rare colors: fairy fawn, khaki, saxony, silver, dusky, blue fawn, cinnamon and emery penciled.   I know they had to give up a couple of these for 2009, but am not sure which ones.

Dave Holderread literally wrote the book on ducks, including an entire chapter on the genetics of duck colors.

My first order in 2003 was for 10 runners.  I also got an order in 2005 that included 6 goslings and 20 runners.  I did have one dead duck on arrival each time and  lost one of the goslings 36 hrs later due in part to my not be prepared properly with vitamins/electrolytes for poultry use.   (It's a long trip though the mail from Oregon to Virginia.)  They were healthy in all other respects - active and vigorous and very friendly!

I also got an order of just goslings in 2006 and all arrived alive and healthy - with 2 free surprise ducklings to boot!

I got another order of 8 goslings in 2007 and all were in fine shape.  (I specifically requested no bonus birds with this order as I was short on space that year.)

And in 2008, I got an order of 5 Anconas and 5 Welsh Harlequins that included one bonus white Ancona.  And a second order of 10 Anconas that included two free white Anconas.  All but one were strong and healthy from the moment they came out of the shipping box.  The one weak one quickly perked up with a little of Dave's magic elixer recipe of vitamin/electrolyte watered honey over the course of a couple hours.  She grew up to be one of the prettiest and had the neatest personality of any duck I've ever owned.

In the winter of 2008/2009 of got an adult Mini Goose gander.  He arrived in perfect shape and has been absolutely trusting from the moment he got out of his shipping box.  He is a delite to be around and helps me fill his water buckets and frequently jumps in his pool while I'm filling it.  I look forward to the Mini Gander I have on order for this fall as a mate for my two Shetlands.  I have no doubt he, too, will be adorable.

As far as I know at this time, they only take orders by mail with payment by check or money order.  Their minimum shipment is 10 ducklings or 4 goslings.

I have previously been able to recommend this hatchery since the birds I had gotten from them were all healthy and alive when they arrived.  But they are now, as of 2009, outsourcing all waterfowl.  So I have no idea what you might get or what hatchery it might ultimately have come from.

As always, David Hartman has been helpful and very nice to deal with.  And was completely honest about no longer being able to be selling from stock he personally has been tending.
