INTRODUCTION

LET’S READ SOME BIBLE VERSES

Let’s read a few Bible verses now, only one hundred and seventy, and see what God wants us to learn and understand more clearly.  I am sorry to say that I have the feeling that some of you, many of you even, will not get past this sentence because you will read the title of this page and “know what is coming” with the Strong’s numbers <165> and <166> (John 3:27 in action, smile).  But I hope you can just sit back, relax, and get ready to read a lot of material.  You don’t have to get any of your Bibles or reference materials out as it is all right here for you (of course you can get them out if you wish and that would be nice too.  I encourage you to do that really.).    I have done all the work for you so now all you have to do is read and as you read you may possibly even find some new and enlightening things; things you never thought were in the Bible; things you never heard in Sunday school or even in the seminary.  Take notes so you can write to me.  I had thought of simply issuing this study and leave out all my comments leaving only the text of the verses so you could see what message from God is here in plain sight by itself.  Maybe you could read just the verses and then go back later and read my comments (in blue color text), as well as the links, along with the verses you will see below.  Let me know what you think, will you?

Now before we get too absorbed in this study I would like to ask why one would go to all this trouble to list a hundred and seventy verses in five different Bible versions and simply read them and get anything out of this, any new insights as to what the Bible means.  They say that the Bible interprets itself or that the Bible explains itself in the way the words are used in context.  When we speak to each other face to face we have ways of expressing ourselves with different vocal tones to make our communication more clear.  One can use a happy voice, a silly voice, or an angry voice but with the same words.  We get different meanings.  In the written word it is more difficult but we can at least read it over and over in different “voices” and get different slants on the same passage.  I don’t need to go on and on about this.  Just read the context and make notes like I did for each verse and you will come to a conclusion about what the Bible intends.  Be careful not to “read more into a verse” but take it at face value.  God is not trying to trick us… but it is reasonable to believe that those who copied, transmitted, and translated the Bible may have their reasons to trick us.  We live in a wicked world (age or eon) and time.  This has been so in all religious documents.  Some religious documents are the thoughts of misguided men but the ones who wrote the Autographs were not misguided but were inspired by God to put words down with the pen.

Below, in the main body of this article, you will see listed one hundred seventy (170) verses with text from the following Bible versions for comparison (along with some of my comments).  Try and read the whole article as questions which come to your mind may be answered with continued reading.  Be patient, it all comes together and makes sense in time.   Also, some of the links are shown with a note to CLICK HERE, some highlighted in yellow, some highlighted in yellow and underlined, and some are simply underlined.

SOME POINTS AS TO WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED

Actually this is like a “game” comparing the texts of several Bibles from Matthew to Revelation where the Greek words AION (the noun, singular and plural) and AIONIOS (the adjective derived from the noun AION) show up.

There are times in the King James when these words show up even though there may be no basis for them to be there as there is nothing in the oldest manuscripts of the Bible in the original languages; Codex Sinaiticus (4th century), the Codex Vaticanus (also 4th century), and the Codex Alexandrinus (5th century).  The reverse is true too, that is, omissions have been made when AION and AIONIOS show up in those oldest manuscripts.  It appears that the compilers of the King James (and other versions too of course) simply added, or omitted, these words to support the English king’s, James Charles Stuart (June 19, 1566 – March 27, 1625), desire to not change things (right or wrong) already being taught by the clergy at that time (notwithstanding the accolades of the website in the link); around 1611.  “King James gave the translators 15 rules by which they had to abide which enslaved the translators to the traditions of the Anglican Church and NOT to sound unbiased translating.” *   If you don’t see the Greek word in the text of the TR, cited here, it may be that the word is in the Greek in the oldest manuscripts but left out of the TR, as well as the KJV.  In some of these cases I inserted the text of the Koine Greek derived from a Photostat copy of the oldest manuscripts so you can see for yourself what these omissions are.

Having said all this so far, let’s say a few more words while we have these things in mind.

Speaking of games, we have an old parlor game called “gossip” where there are a number of people sitting in chairs in a circle around the periphery of the room.  One person starts by whispering a message into the ear of the next person to his right.  It is something that can be whimpered only once; nothing too long or difficult (Example: “Six brown cows jumped over the barn with a monky on their back.).  Then that person whispers what he heard (or thought he heard) into the ear of the person to his right.  This continues around the room and when the message returns it is compared to the original message written down by the originator.  Do you think that the message is always exactly the same?  More than likely it is quite distorted and that is what makes this game so entertaining.  Could you believe that the same distortions have been happening to the transmission, translation, and interpretations… handing the Bible text down through the centuries… of God’s word?  I have found it so and it is not entertaining at all as it leads to doctrines which are not only very hurtful but slander God’s name and character; make Him a liar.  I should also suggest that as you read the verses below, and especially the information in the four boxes, you will be “entertained” by the many contradictions and claims that simply don’t make sense, things that common sense tells you cannot be right.      John 3:27

Now just how could these errors have come into our Bible?  Many will be offended and exclaim, “Well, God, being Perfect and all Powerful, would certainly not ‘allow’ these errors to happen.”  Let me have you read some verses about what God “allows” and then get your head on straight if you can (Forgive me, I tend to be a little sarcastic at times.).  I had as much trouble with these verses at first as you will, but let’s see what a few of them say:     Eph 1:11

Isa 45:7  I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].  (about EVIL  << click here)

Lam 3:38  Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?

Prov 16:4  The LORD hath made all [things] for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

Ecc 7:13  Consider the work of God: for who can make straight, which he hath made crooked

Amos 3:6  “…shall there be EVIL in a city, and the Lord has not done it?”

Job 2:10  Yet he said to her, As some decadent woman speaks are you speaking. Indeed should we receive good from the One, Elohim, and should we not receive evil? In all this, Job did not sin with his lips. (note)   << click here

God has a good reason to use evil for His purpose of the ages.  He knows we learn better by making mistakes.

Here is the lie that man desperately wants to believe, and does believe.  Man (when I use “man” it is in the third person and means humanity both male and female) has more difficulty believing God than believing Satan:

Gen 3:4  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:  5  For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

While we are looking at some verses, we need to look at this one and talk about it too:

Col 1:16  for in Him is all created, that in the heavens and that on the earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones, or lordships, or sovereignties, or authorities, all is created through Him and for Him (CV)

It is believed by many that God had no beginning and will have no ending.  That is, God always exists; or simply, God exists.  Thus, God is the only Uncreated Being.

Now, think about this a bit.  In what I just said, I am using “time” words such as “beginning,” “ending,” “always” which can be confusing in trying to “pin God’s existence and duration” down.  We might get close to getting a grasp on Who God is by saying God exists outside of time.  As we generally understand time, could time have had a beginning and will it have an ending (no more need for daylight saving time changes)?  Since God, through His Son Christ Jesus, created ALL things, time must have been created too.  Not only does Col 1:16, just above, prove it but just below is a verse dealing with time, “eons” and “ages” for example (or are all the words you see not “time words” – like “worlds” or “universe” eh?).

Heb 1:

2 …by whom also he made the worlds;  (KJV)

2 … he made the worlds;  (ASV)    Below, looking a 1 Cor 10:11, the ASV translates with another English word.

2 … He also makes the eons;  (CLNT)

2 … he made the universe.  (NIV)

2 …he made the systems of things.  (NWT)

2 …He made the Ages.  (Weymouth)

2 …He did make the ages;  (Young’s literal)

2 …di ou kai touV aiwnaV epoihsen  (TR)

Do you see the English interlinear:  He-makES THE eons?

The verses above are not identical are they?  We apparently all don’t have the same Bible; the same Word from God.  After you complete this word study you should have acquired  some different ideas (hopefully more accurate ones) about what the words in the Bible really mean and then you may be able to put it all together in your mind in a more meaningful and joyous way.

One of the questions that you may have now is that since God made (created) “time” will time, as we know it, come to an end… and then what?  Check out the verse below  (again, are all the words you see “time words”… so what does the word “world” mean anyway?  And why did the ASV use “ages” here and “worlds” above in Heb 1:2?):

1 Cor 10:

11 …the ends of the world  (KJV)    The word “ends” here is plural to give a you a hint.

11 …the ends of the ages  (ASV)  Is this consistent with the ASV verse above in Heb1?

11 …the consummations of the eons have attained.  (CLNT)

11 … the fulfillment of the ages has come.  (NIV

11 … the ends of the systems of things  (NWT)

11 … the ends of the Ages  (Weymouth)

11 … the end of the ages  (Young’s literal)

11 … ta telh twn aiwnwn  (TR)      The transliteration of the word here is AION in the plural.

STRONG’S NUMBERS AND THE GREEK TEXT OF THE BIBLE

Just a brief note about a man named James Strong. << click here   Strong’s number for AION << click here  is 165 and Strong’s number for AIONIOS is 166.  As you read all the verses here you will notice that there will be an overwhelming occurrence of words like everlasting, eternal, world, worlds… but popularity does not prove they represent the most faithful meaning found in the oldest manuscripts.  Please simply keep reading.  These things can’t be simply poured into your head in a moment.  When you go to the web page on AIONIOS << click here you will see that man says it means “everlasting” and a little further down in that web page the contradictions “agelong, everlasting.”  Read on in this word study and you will see what the problem is and its solution.  Be patient, don’t rush this!  Just continue reading and all this will sink in in time.  Your persistence will be favorably rewarded.  Remember, this is a Bible study not a arbitrary critique of a novel.  [more about AIONIOS << click here]

James Strong compiled his popular concordance of the King James Version and it is widely used.  There is also a very good concordance by Robert Young << click here  who also compiled the version of the Bible commonly referred to as Young's Literal Translation.  You can buy these books at any Christian Book Store for a reasonable price and also over the web of course.

WILL WE FIND SOME THINGS THAT SIMPLY MAY NOT FIT INTO OUR MINDS?

The object of this “game” is to study and ponder (and even pray that John 3:27 will be gracious to us) all of the following 170 verses and then find the one English word for the Greek noun AION (both singular and plural), and the one English word for the Greek adjective AIONIOS which would make sense consistently, without contradiction but be in harmony with the rest of the Bible text, in each and every verse… even if it appears to rub you the wrong way with what you have been taught in Sunday school… or in your seminary studies.

For example:

John 3:16  For God so loved the world <2889>, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish <622>, but have everlasting <166> life <2222>   17  For God sent not his Son into the world <2889> to condemn the world <2889>; but that the world <2889> through him might be saved.   (KJV)

The Greek word <166> is the adjective of the word <165> and, as you follow the 170 verses below in context you may find that John 3:16 would more closely follow the Greek by reading it this way:

16  For thus God loves the world, so that He gives His only-begotten Son, that everyone who is believing in Him should not be perishing, but may be having life eonian.  17  For God does not dispatch His Son into the world that He should be judging the world, but that the world may be saved through Him.

So what does that mean… life eonian anyway?  We could look in some of man’s Bible dictionaries and web page helps, as we have mentioned above and noted below in the four boxes, but wouldn’t it be better to find out the meaning of a word as God uses it in His Word?  Keep reading now… this is serious business.  People who have thought about this seriously and taken the words literally, the commonly translated words in our popular English Bibles, have been caused to do some terrible things; killed others (the Crusades), killed themselves (lost hope for the future), and gone stark raving mad (Rodger Tutt).  That is not good but it is to be so for some.  It seems that God wants many to wallow in their ignorance and depravity, for now, so that they will come to their senses one day to realize they really do need a Saviour and a Mediator.

By the way, in the verses above for John 3:16 in the two versions shown, we need to talk about the meaning of the words in the English language “might” and “may.”  They don’t mean “per chance it could happen” but it is sure to happen.  When I hold my pen in my hand above the desk and say, “I will let go of the pen so that it might (may) fall.”  What do you believe will happen every time?  As you know, and it is unfortunate, we use the words “might” and “may” in informal use as a possible happening but not a sure thing (It might rain today.).

All the Strong’s numbers noted in John 3:16 (KJV) above noted <thus> are also so very important and it would be good to learn their original intended meanings and impact.  In this study we will concentrate on AION <165> and AIONIOS <166>.  AION and AIONIOS are transliterations of the Greek spelling.

Those of us who win the “game” get to realize that God really is a God of limitless capability, gracious love, and unending patience… and knows what He is doing throughout His plan of the five long ages until the consummation.

Another note about capitalization… I like to see the pronouns that refer to Deity all capitalized.  The KJV many times does use “he” for God but other versions use “He” for God.  For God’s Son (not son) the first letter of the pronouns also need to be capitalized.

THE MAIN BODY OF THE STUDY STARTS HERE:

Below is a complete list which includes all the occurances of the Greek words AION and AIONIOS in our Bible.  By reading all these verses we can determine the one English noun for AION and the one English adjective for AIONIOS by the way it is used in context.  All right.  Let’s get to work.

——  1

CV,  KJV,  TR,  ASV,  RU-EN:xxxxxx

Unfortunately, we start the study with a verse that apparently has some extra text in the KJV as well as the TR.  The text that has been added is stricken through here.  You will find some Bible reference texts that show Strong’s number 165 here but in the oldest manuscripts in the original languages AION is simply missing.

Matt 6:13  165 not in oldest manuscripts

And mayest Thou not be bringing us into trial, but rescue us from the wicked one.'  [There is no “rest of the verse” here as it is not in the oldest Greek texts.]

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.  [Interestingly the ASV, here, leaves out “the rest of the verse” as does this Russian version too.]

Не введи нас в искушение, но сохрани нас от зла.

Do not lead us into temptation, but keep us from harm.

(For some reason that translation didn’t have second part. In Russian Synodal Translation:

“и не введи нас в искушение, но избавь нас от лукавого. Ибо Твое есть Царство и сила и слава во веки. Аминь.”

Also do not lead into us a temptation, but relieve us from crafty. For You is the Empire and force and glory in Centuries. Amen)

The Russian pastor wanted to maintain tradition it seems.

——  2

You may recall that this is the verse suggesting the “unpardonable sin.”

Matt 12:32  165

And whosoever may be saying a word against the Son of Mankind, it will be pardoned him, yet whoever may be saying aught against the holy spirit, it shall not be pardoned him, neither in this eon nor in that which is impending.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come.

Кто скажет что-либо против Сына Человеческого, тому это простится, но кто говорит против Святого Духа, тот не будет прощен ни в этом веке, ни в будущем

Who will tell something against the Son Human, to that it will say goodbye, but who speaks against the Holy Spirit, that will not be forgiven neither in this century, nor in the future

Matt 13:22  165

Now he who is being sown in the thorns, this is he who is hearing the word, and the worry of this eon and the seduction of riches are stifling the word, and it is becoming unfruitful.

He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

The seed which has fallen in a blackthorn, is about the person who hears a word, but vital cares and aspiration to riches muffle it, and the seed remains fruitless.

——  4

This verse indicates that what ever the meaning of 165 is it comes to an end.

Matt 13:39  165

Now the enemy who sows them is the Adversary. Now the harvest is the conclusion of the eon. Now the reapers are messengers.

Enemy who has sown them, is a devil. The harvest is the end of the world, and reapers are angels

In Russian Synodal Translation:

А посеянное в тернии означает того, кто слышит слово, но забота века сего и обольщение богатства заглушает слово, и оно бывает бесплодно.

And that was sown in thorns means the one who hears a word, but the care of this century and deceitfulness of riches muffles a word, and it happens fruitlessly.

——  5

This verse also indicates that what ever 165 is it is not “without end” as some of our Bible reference works claim.   The KJV uses the phrase “end of this world” but the Greek is not “world” but is AION.  The Greek word for “wolrd” (including our earth) is KOSMOS.

Matt 13:40  165

Even as the darnel, then, are being culled and burned up with fire, thus shall it be in the conclusion of the eon.

——  6

This verse also indicates that what ever 165 is it comes to an end.  Please keep this in mind as you continue to read all of the verses… “end of the world”   end of the 165.

Matt 13:49  165

Thus shall it be in the conclusion of the eon. The messengers will be coming out and they will be severing the wicked from the midst of the just.

Так будет и в конце мира. Придут ангелы, заберут злых из среды праведных

So will be and in the end of the world. Angels will come, will take away the malicious just from the environment

This is a verse that many use to support the idea that some places, or ideas, or God’s actions, are “without end.”  The problem is that when we look at other verses, such as Matt 13:39. we see that what ever the meaning of 165 is it comes to an end.  AIONIOS (noted here in the Greek, Strong’s number 166) is the adjective of 165.  Would you agree that the Bible, God’s Word, can not contradict itself as it does here in our popular Bibles.  I believe that this verse is talking about a limited time of corrective judgment that, in God’s time, comes to an end.

Matt 18:8  166

Now, if your hand or your foot is snaring you, strike it off and cast it from you. Is it ideal for you to be entering into life maimed or lame, or, having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the fire eonian?

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

This verse has the Greek word AIONIOS, the adjective of the Greek word AION.  The elect (the humans in 1 Tim 4:9-11 noted as “specially of those that believe.”) are the ones that obtain immortal life at the next coming of Jesus Christ when He resurrects them from their graves.  These are the ones to live and reign with Christ.  Since they are immortal they don’t need to worry about “everlasting life” and will continue in existence past the consummation, the end of the ages.  Weymouth calls this “the Life of the Ages” otherwise known as eonian life.  Stick with me.  This is not as difficult as you might make it out to be.

Matt 19:16  166

And lo! one coming to Him said, "Teacher, what good shall I be doing that I should be having life eonian?"

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have everlasting life?

Once the person has approached to Jesus and has asked: - the Teacher, what kind I should make to receive an everlasting life?

Would you like life eonian and reign with Christ?

Matt 19:29  166

This is the second occurrence, the first in Matt 6:13, in the King James New Testament text, of “for ever” and it will show up many more times.  After the consummation, the end of the ages, there needs to be no concern for withering fig trees.  What is this passage actually talking about; certainly more that barren fig trees I would think.

Matt 21:19  165

And, perceiving one fig tree on the roadside, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only. And He is saying to it, "No longer, by any means, may fruit be coming of you for the eon." And withered instantly is the fig tree.

And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away

Увидев у дороги инжирное дерево, Он подошел к нему, но не нашел на нем ничего, кроме листьев.
Тогда Иисус сказал дереву: - Пусть же от тебя

Having seen at road инжирное a tree, It has approached to it, but has not found on it anything, except leaves. Then Jesus has told to a tree: - Let from you never any more there will be no fruits! The fig has dried up at once.

——  11

This verse again affirms the fact that the Greek noun AION is something with the meaning that it ends.  Since we get the meaning of words by the way they are used in context, how can our Bible reference materials (the four boxes at the top of this study) say this word is “without end”?

Matt 24:3  165

Now at His sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what is the sign of Thy presence and of the conclusion of the eon?"

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what [shall be] the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

When Jesus sat on the Olive mountain, pupils have approached to It without strangers and have asked: - Tell to us when it will occur also what sign will anticipate Your coming and the end of this century?

——  12

How can certain translations use the word “everlasting” or “eternal” for a Greek adjective that comes from a Greek noun AION that, in context, has been shown to end?  What would one be led to believe with that kind of modern English translations?  Maybe there is some confusion here.

Matt 25:41  166

"Then shall He be declaring to those also at His left, `Go from Me, you cursed, into the fire eonian, made ready for the Adversary and his messengers.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

приготовленный для дьявола и его ангелов.

Then He will tell also that who will be on a left-hand side: "Go from Me, damned, to the everlasting fire prepared for a devil and its angels.

——  13

Why would certain translations use two different English adjectives for one Greek adjective; “everlasting,” “eternal?”  Why would they use an English word that contradicts the meaning derived from the way the Greek word is used in context?  Is “punishment” in this verse the “judgment” considered here?  Prov 94:15 – But judgment shall return unto righteousness…      Could this verse be actually referring to the elect who obtain age lasting life (eonian life) and the rest of the human beings entering a corrective judgment?  We humans today have “corrective institutions” with the idea being to rehabilitate offenders.  Wouldn’t God do a better job of correcting humans than we do?  Wouldn’t that be a loving action by Father God Himself?  One needs to get a grasp of the plan of the ages to better understand these things… chart further down.

This blurb from my surfing the web may increase your better understanding:

I think that everyone who needs it will experience just the right amount of what the Bible calls "kolasis aionian" which means "age-during corrective chastisement."

Greek scholar William Barclay wrote concerning kolasis aionion in Matthew 25:46

"The Greek word for punishment is kolasis, which was not originally an ethical word at all. It originally meant the pruning of trees to make them grow better. There is no instance in Greek secular literature where kolasis does not mean remedial punishment. It is a simple fact that in Greek kolasis always means remedial punishment. God's punishment is always for a cure."

Matt 25:46  166

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life everlasting.

This is one of the verses that people like to cite as the “unforgivable sin” and use it to support that some places, or ideas, or God’s actions, are “eternal” or “endless.”   It is the first verse we are coming to that has both Greek words, AION <165> and AIONIOS <166> respectively in it.

Mark 3:29  165  166

yet whoever should be blaspheming against the holy spirit is having no pardon for the eon, but is liable to the eonian penalty for the sin"—

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never <165> forgiveness, but is in danger of everlasting <166> damnation:

but who slanders the Holy Spirit, to that will not say goodbye never, the fault for this sin remains on the person for ever.

The Russian does not seem to translate the word we are studying but the thought of the verse seems to be the same.

Mark 4:19  165

In the King James this is a strange translation as we have both the noun and the adjective in the same verse.  Is this verse talking about a certain class of humans having immortal life in the coming age?

Sometimes the word AION is plural so this would mean that the word refers to something with an end so the nest one can begin.  By the way, Christ’s rule will end even though the Kingdom will continue.  1 Cor 15: 25  For He must be reigning until…  Another strange thing is the expression “for ever and ever” which seems to refer to several evers, several eternities.

Here we have two Greek words in the same verse, one a noun, the other its adjective.

Luke 18:30  165 166   CV, KJV, TR, ASV, RU, RU to EN, my comment

who may not by all means be getting back manyfold in this era, and in the coming eon, life eonian."

Now you could say it this way, “in the coming age, life of the ages.”  You see, the noun age does not have an adjectival form like eon does (eonian) so you have to say “of the ages.”

Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

All right.  This makes no sense in the KJV.  What is the adjective of world?  It should read “and in the world to come life of the world” should it not?  Because the adjective of 165 is 166.  I suppose you could use “worldly” but that would never do for the glorious life EONIAN.

oV ou mh apolabh pollaplasiona en tw kairw toutw kai en tw aiwni tw ercomenw zwhn aiwnion

Even the ASV here follows the KJV to keep the traditional dogma alive.

will receive many times more in this century, and in the century ahead-eternal life.

This is an on-line computer translation in MS Word 2010.

In like maner, here it needs to be “in a century the future a life of the century” to be consistant grammatically too.  Although the Russian uses the word century many times, a finite duration, it still clings to traditional dogma here with вечную or eternal (everlasting)

And in the century to come, life of the century.

И в предстоящем столетии, жизнь века.

And in the coming century, the century.   <<< reverse translation

And in the days to come, daily life.

We need to take a more extensive look at the word “perishing” in this verse the way it is used in other verses to obtain its real meaning too.  It does not mean total annihilation.  This could be another word study like this one we are working on now.

Who does the choosing?  John 15:16  Not you choose Me, but I choose you, and I appoint you, that you may be going away and be bringing forth much fruit, and your fruit may be remaining, that anything whichsoever you should be requesting the Father in My name, He will be giving it to you.  CV

The King James didn’t list the Strong’s number 166 here and I don’t know why except that the Greek word AIONIOS does not show up in the Textus Receptus but does in the oldest manuscripts.  By the way, the word here for life is the Greek word <2222> transliterated ZOE.  That is immortal life.  Did you know that once you become immortal you will never die?

What are we to make of this listing in the King James of the Greek word 165 and nothing in the English that comes close to AGE or EON.  The word NEVER is the one that seems to “fit” here.

Reference to Strong’s number 166 was not noted in the King James.  Apparently the Greek word AIONIOS was not in the source texts the compilers of the King James used back in 1611.  The word life here is ZOE in the Greek, Strong’s number <2222>.

But there will not come yet time when God has defined to restore all and on which It has notified for a long time through the sacred prophets, Jesus should remain in heavens.

Here we have an apparent contradiction.  Some of the verses above have the Greek noun 165 AION as having and ending and/or a beginning.  In this verse we have the adjective of AION, 166 AIONIOS.  How can that be translated as “for ever” here and in many other places?  Even the TR has the Greek in it’s text as AIONIOS.  Yes, I know, you will go to some Bible reference materials (such as the ones I noted in the four boxes above) that say AIONIOS is without end.  A finite period of time can not be eternity.

We speak wisdom, however, among them that are fullgrown: yet a wisdom not of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are coming to nought:

Мудрость же мы проповедуем среди людей, духовно зрелых, но это не мудрость этого мира и не мудрость
властителей этого
мира, которые рано или поздно превращаются в ничто.

Wisdom we preach among people, spiritually mature, but it not wisdom of this world and not wisdom of masters of this world which are destroyed sooner or later.

Could it be there was a condition before the ages (God being the only entity)?  One version uses the plural for 165.

1Cor 2:7  165

No, we speak about secret wisdom Divine which has been hidden till now, but from the beginning of existence of the world has been intended for our glory.

Making this file allows me to roll things over in my mind about these verses and I wonder about the ones like this one where the KJV, ASV, and the Russian versions all have the English word WORLD when in the Greek, even in the TR, it is the word AION.  This would give one a  hint as to when the error of translation crept in and by whom would it not?

Here it seems that the Russian version departs a bit from the Greek.  I guess that makes the Bible read more easily but it looses the full meaning God intended… would it not?

One needs to stretch his imagination to make sense of the phrase “ends of the world” as used in the KJV; using the plural “ends” and the singular “world.”  The ASV translation makes better sense to me.  We can believe here that there are at least two more ages after the one we are in now, this age coming to a horrible end with an earthquake to kill very many.  (Do you recall my using this verse at the beginning of the study?)

1Cor 10:11  165

Let’s take a close look at this passage.  Notice here that there are two English words COURSE and WORLD.  The respective Greek words here are AION and  KOSMOS.  You will recall, above, that in several places the KJV translated the Greek word 165 as WORLD.  Read the bold Greek in the TR below.

Ephe 2:2  165

——  93

The King James does use the word AGES (plural) here, a word in English that pertains to TIME.  Why did the King James compilers do that here and not other places where they used other words such as “world” and “worlds” (plural)?

Ephe 2:7  165

that, in the oncoming eons, He should be displaying the transcendent riches of His grace in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

We need to take a break, slow down, and study this verse for awhile.  Go back to Mat 21:19 and you will see that the KJV translated the Greek word AION as “for ever.”  If the compilers of the KJV had been consistent in using “for ever” every time AION showed up, they would have translated it here by “for ever” and so let’s simply do that and see if it makes sense:

That in the for ever(s) to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.  Are you smiling now or crying?

We also need to understand the phrase "in the ages to come" to mean that there are at least two more ages after the one we are in now, the “present evil <165>”  (Gala 1:4).

Thereby He wished to show immense riches of the good fortune shown to us through Jesus Christ in future centuries.

Who creates ALL?  Which is it; the beginning of the “world” or the beginning of the “ages”?  Does God keep secrets or hide things from us or are we to dig like mining for gold for His teachings?

There is some confusion here with Strong’s number.  The Greek word is the noun AION but the English in the KJV uses the adjective “eternal” and Strong’s 165 shows up in my KJV software here.  What is the “eternal purpose” in the KJV in contast to “the purpose of the eons” in the CLNT?

You can see where the ASV compilers got the idea of “for ever and ever (and the same phrase in many other places in the KJV).  The eon of the eons is the final eon in God’s plan of the eons (ages) just before the consummation.  Look at the chart just a few verses down.

12  For ours is not a conflict with mere flesh and blood, but with the despotisms, the empires, the forces that control and govern this dark world--the spiritual hosts of evil arrayed against us in the heavenly warfare.

——  98

We see several passages where the King James uses the phrase “for ever and ever” which in the original languages is “for the eons of the eons.”  One must have a grasp of God’s plan for the eons or ages for more clarity here.

Phil 4:20  165

Now unto God and our Father [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Let to our God and the Father there will be a glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Now that you are getting the drift of this study, it is time for me to share a wonderful chart of the Eons or Ages.  This graphically shows the plan God has for His creation and what happens to us all throughout these many, many very long periods of time, periods of time in which God completes His plan for His creation, up to the conclusion of the ages, the consummation, where all are to be made immortal because at that point in time DEATH will be abolished and all the graves will thus be vacated (1 Cor 15: 26  The last enemy [that] shall be destroyed [is] death)  (KJV).

Yes, there will be corrective judgment (punishment) just like we on earth have these places called corrective institutions (prisons).  The problem with our management of prisons is that we don’t have enough power to make all wicked people repentant and return to productive and peaceful society.  Man fails in this but God never fails.

Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: small chart of the eons

The part on the chart above where is says FOR EVER AND EVER refers to a limited span of time, the last two very long ages or eons.  Refer to the verses cited for more help to understand that God does His work within these ages and then comes the consummation revealed in First Corinthians chapter fifteen.  This book, written by Paul, tells about the “end” of things, not the book of Revelation, a vision written by John, as many may assume.

It seems that “for ever and ever” is actually two very long periods of time in the future, the first ending with THE GREAT WHITE THRONE judgment.  (Judgment?  Psa 94:15)  The last long period of time ends with the termination of Christ’s rule.   1 Cor 15: 25  For He must be reigning until He should be placing all His enemies under His feet.

——  99

Yes, I think God does “keep secrets” because only a few, at this time, are to know more.  Could this be the reason Jesus said this:  John 16:12  "Still much have I to say to you, but you are not able to bear it at present.”

Notice that the KJV translated AION (plural) here as “ages” like was done in Eph 2:7 above.

This verse infers <165>s in the past, at least two.

The verse below is used by those claiming the Bible teaches “eternal destruction” in an “eternal hell” but now do you really believe that the Bible teaches “eternal destruction” after reading all the passages down to here?

No, I should ask if you believe that AION and its adjective AIONIOS, really have anything to do with words like “eternal” or “everlasting” or “for ever and ever”?

There are many articles available on the Internet expanding on the fact that there are many intentional additions and changes to our popular English Bibles (and even foreign language Bibles, like the Russian one here) that do not faithfully follow the original oldest manuscripts in the original languages.  Here we are looking at only one word, AION, and its adjective AIONIOS.  We need to answer all the other questions which are coming to your mind, words like HELL, DESTRUCTION, LOST, GRACE, SAVIOUR, TRINITY, SATAN, LUCIFER, GOD’S WILL (free will), on and on to put this all together logically, consistently, and coherently.  Believe me, it all comes together as we continue to learn that God really does have ALL in His loving hands.

2The 1:9  166

Since God is the King of the EONS and of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, et al.  It does not mean that His duration is limited to just these does it?  As we have already shown, the phrase “for ever and ever” means “for the ages of the ages” because after the end of the ages all will be reconciled to God.  Death and Sin will be abolished and all the bad guys will be rehabilitated as they have played their part during the span of the eons and “it is finished.”
John 19:30  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,
It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Gave up the ghost… as with all people who die, His spirit (ghost) returned to His God and Father, His body went to the tomb, and His soul (consciousness) vanished to the unseen.

This can be a confusing verse.  In the KJV we can insert “eternal” where 166 shows up.  Can you see the sense after that is done?  It would be then consistent with other passages where 166 is translated “eternal” or “for ever.”  The way this verse is translated in the KJV, ASV, obscure the meaning of the verse.  “Before the creation of the world” is getting close to the Greek but the word “eternal” can be misleading.  How about “before the creation of the ages”? (Heb 1:2)

Titu 1:2  166

By now, having read to this point, you should be able to identify the Greek words that starts out aiwni...    In this verse they use a noun “ever” and the Greek here is 166, an adjective.  There are many such discrepancies in our popular Bibles.

Phle 1:15  166

——  116

If the Greek noun 165, used in this verse, is “for ever” then why does the KIV, and ASV,  translate using the plural word “worlds?”   There can be only one “for ever” or onle one Universe or only one eternity.

Hebr 1:2  165

The word “spirit,” as we see used in this verse, would be another word to study and maybe sometime we can look at that translation.  Is the word capitalized or should it be all in lower case?  Greek was all one case you know so maybe the capitalization, or leaving it in lower case, by some versions is a perversion.

Hebr 9:14  166

Just what is a mediator or intermediary anyway?

Hebr 9:15  166

And therefore He is the Mediator of a new covenant, so that at a death occurring for the deliverance of the transgressions of those under the first covenant, those who are called may be obtaining the promise of the eonian enjoyment of the allotment.

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions [that were] under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of everlasting inheritance.

And for this cause he is the mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the everlasting inheritance.

И поэтому Христос стал посредником этого нового союза, чтобы призванные получили обещанное вечное наследие. Это стало возможным благодаря тому, что Его смерть освободила их от грехов, совершенных еще в условиях первого союза.

And consequently the Christ became the intermediary of this new union that called have received the promised everlasting heritage. It became possible thanks to that His death has released them from the sins made still in the conditions of the first union.

The end of the 165 (plural); the KJV says one thing and the ASV says another.  You choose.  I am not sure what the Russian is.  Some believe that after the conclusion of the ages, sin will no longer exist in God’s creation; so it would be a fact that sin would be “finished.”

Hebr 9:26  165

since then He must often be suffering from the disruption of the world, yet now, once, at the conclusion of the eons, for the repudiation of sin through His sacrifice, is He manifest.

For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Otherwise it would be necessary for It to suffer from the beginning of the world repeatedly; It once, by the end of centuries, was for destruction of a sin by the sacrifice of himself.

The Greek noun 165 used here is in the plural which means there is more than one… more than one “eternity” does not make sense in all the other verses where it is used in this study.   What is meant by “worlds” here?  And the Russian… how many Universes can there be?  I wonder where that Russian version came from; certainly not the TR as the TR here is faithful to the oldest manuscripts.

Hebr 11:3  165

By faith we are apprehending the eons to adjust to a declaration of God, so that what is being observed  has not come out of what is appearing.

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Именно верой мы принимаем и осознаем, что вселенная была создана по повелению Бога и что все видимое было создано из невидимого.

Belief we accept and we realise that the Universe has been created on command of God and that all visible has been created from the invisible.

This verse, in the popular translations, teaches an everlasting fiery punishment, right?  But we know that the Greek word AIONIOS, used in this verse, is the adjective coming from the Greek noun AION which, by looking at many Bible verses in context in the oldest manuscripts, is not endless is it?  The word 165 is a finite duration of time, Matt 12:32, Matt 13:22, Matt 13:39, Matt 13:40, Matt 13:49, Matt 24:3, Matt 28:20, Mark 10:30, Luke 16:8, Luke 18:30, Luke 20:34, Luke 20:35, Roma 12:2, 1Cor 1:20, 1Cor 2:6, 1Cor 2:8, 1Cor 3:18, 2Cor 4:4, Gala 1:4, Ephe 1:21, 1Tim 6:17, 2Tim 4:10, Titu 2:12, Hebr 6:5, Jude 1:13. to mention a few verses, and so what is the duration of 166?

IN CLOSING, A FEW COMMENTS:

1.  Now that you know the meaning of the words AION and AIONIOS, does this make you wonder about traditional teachings in most of today’s churches?  Tell me what you learned by this study please.

2.  http://www.concordant.org/catalog/index.html

Go to this web page and search on this string “EONIAN: EVERLASTING or AGE-LASTING?”

This is a 47 page booklet described as follows:

This booklet explores what has become a prolific source of confusion–the usual inconsistency in rendering the Hebrew word olam and the Greek words aiõn and aiõnios (uniformly translated “eon” and “eonian” in the Concordant Version). These same terms in precisely identical settings are frequently represented by a variety of English words conveying widely divergent ideas, even antithetical concepts. Clearly, a study of the subject should be founded on the inspired Original alone.

3.  I tried to post the TR in this study even when it does have, or does not have, either or both AION and AIONIOS to show inconsistencies.  I show the old Koine Greek in some of these places where the TR omits the words.  The other texts are here to also show the discrepancies and inconsistencies of these texts, KJV, ASV, and the Russian.

4.  You can use your own Bible and your own reference texts here to follow along.  Look for foot notes and comments in your Bible too.  I can get an ultra-literal Greek text in Koine if you ask.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE CONCORDANT VERSION:

Here is a web page (URL), below, that maligns the major compiler of the Concordant Literal New Testament.

Yes, the CLNT does resemble Young’s Literal with its quite literal word for word text too.  One can use Young’s concordance and obtain the same information in the word study above and come to the same conclusions.

The so called “peculiar teachings” are logical deductions from the readings of the oldest manuscripts, Codex Sinaiticus (4th century), the Codex Vaticanus (also 4th century), and the Codex Alexandrinus (5th century); whereas the traditional, and generally accepted teachings in most of today’s churches, are the truly heretical teachings and not what the Autographs teach.

“Universalism” (also called ultimate reconciliation) is the eventual salvation of all, in God’s time and way, but there can be, and is, confusion with another group called the “Unitarian Universalism” who have nothing to do with the Concordant  Publishing Concern and does have a number of unbiblical teachings.

“Soul sleep” is false and not taught in the CLNT because of the fact that in death there is no consciousness at all.  When a person is dead he is DEAD and only comes to life again at God’s bidding.  At the next coming of Christ, those that are His, the elect (chosen by God Himself), will be resurrected to immortality to reign with Him in the oncoming ages; that is their AIONIAN life.  The rest will be raised to be judged (brought to become righteous – Psa 94:15) at the Great White Throne, die in the lake of fire (you have to be mortal to die then), and be resurrected to immortality at the consummation per 1 Cor 15 when DEATH is abolished so no one is left in his grave.  Many of the “bad eggs” in this life will be there but they will have been totally rehabilitated by God.  There will be no “bad eggs” in “heaven” so don’t worry about that.

The teachings of Calvinism and Armenianism are partially good but both have an incomplete, so incorrect, message.

The orthodox interpretations of the word AIONIOS does not harmonize, does not make sense, when the orthodox meaning of it, everlasting, is set into ALL the occurrences in the Bible text.  As seen in the word study above, we need one English word for ALL occurrences.  We can’t have it mean Age-during in one verse and Everlasting in another… unless we also believe that the color black can sometimes be the color white.

A colostomy pouch and a spare tire have at least one thing in common, they are used in an emergency but they are no more the same as are ETERNAL and EONIAN.  These people who insist that EONIAN is the same as ETERNAL are also able to have black and white paint in the same paint can.  Sometimes they dip the brush in and can paint white color.  Sometimes they can dip the brush in the same can and paint black.

An ANGEL (noun) is ANGELIC (adjective of angel) and not also, when we choose, DEMONIC.  There are “bad” angels of course, Satan is one (not Lucifer, another word study) and he is “devilish” from his creation.

There are other Bibles that use the word Age-lasting or Age-during so this idea is not unique to the Concordant version.

Many of the people who wrote the Bible were not seminary educated but they were inspired.  Of course some students of the Bible today are also inspired.  You need to pray that John 3:27 will lead you to the correct understanding of God’s will and intention.

Obscuration of Biblical teachings is what traditional teachings do.  Who is calling the kettle black here anyway?  It is man who would rather believe Satan than God.  John 3:27 will be gracious to those who really have been blessed by God to know what He teaches.  John 3:27 will curse those who God needs to chastise; those that need to wallow in their sin and stupidity until they realize they really do need a Saviour.

Also, in the blurb below, it talks about “the soul’s immortality” which is nonsense as the soul only “lives” when God first breaths life into man’s body at birth (conception?) and “dies” when man dies and is placed in his grave.  There is no such thing as an immortal soul.”  I believe the blurb is confusing the word “soul” with the word “spirit” (in lower case for man and uppercase for deity) as the spirit cannot die.  When a man dies, the body returns to the earth, the soul no longer exists (the man is no longer conscious), and the spirit of the man returns to God the same way Christ’s Spirit returned to His God and His Father when He died.  We need to think straight about these things by searching the Word of God carefully.

1926. Adolph Ernst Knoch, Concordant version, the Sacred Scriptures: designed to put the English reader in possession of all the vital facts of divine revelation without a former knowledge of Greek, by means of a restored Greek text, with various readings, conforming, as far as possible, to the inspired autographs, a consistent sublinear based upon a standard English equivalent for each Greek element, and an idiomatic, emphasized English version with notes, which are linked together and correlated for the English reader by means of an English concordance and lexicon and a complementary list of the Greek elements. Los Angeles: Concordant Publishing Concern, 1926. A.E. Knoch (1874-1965) was associated with the ultra-dispensationalist E. W. Bullinger for a time, was the editor of a magazine called Unsearchable Riches, and founded the Concordant Publishing Concern to publish his translation of the Bible. The version resembles Young's Literal Translation, being hyper-literal, but it was evidently designed to support Knoch's peculiar teachings, which included such heretical doctrines as Universalism, "soul sleep," Arminian soteriology, and Arian Christology. He avoids orthodox interpretations by various means, as for example in his treatment of the Greek word aionios ("everlasting"). Knoch translates this word "eonian" instead of "everlasting," and explains in his writings that this adjective should be understood in the sense "pertaining to the æon" or "age-long." By this means he obscures the biblical teaching on the soul's immortality and the everlasting punishment of the unredeemed. Knoch had no formal education in the biblical languages.

Blessings to all and keep reading…

OTHER END NOTES FROM TIME TO TIME:

4/15/2010 9:36 AM:

Well, look at this.  I have gone on and on for over one hundred pages in my MS Word file.  I have only scratched the surface.  You can Google word groups like “aion aionios” and read a lot more on both sides of these beliefs.  Only John 3:27 will be gracious to you as it is God’s choice, not yours.  Anyway, I made another web page about “free will” that suggests some other things to consider.

There are some other things I would like to say about RELIGION and POLITICS; The two things one must never talk about! (Another lie of the mainstream.)

Note about the Greek word AIDIOS <126> imperceptible

In a couple of verses in the KJV we find the English words “eternal” and “everlasting” but they are not associated with the Greek words AION <165> or AIONIOS <166>, the noun and its adjective.

By the way, what does God’s word say about messing with it:  Rev 22:18  “I am testifying to everyone who is hearing the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If ever anyone may be appending to them, God shall be appending to him the calamities written in this scroll.”

Rom 1:20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal <126> power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: {so...: or, that they may be}

Jud 1:6  And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting <126> chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. {first estate: or, principality}

Updated to some degree 6/19/2011 4:35 AM but I am still nit-picking it.
