The ZIP Code Resources Page
Before you apply the resources on this page, consider these caveats about ZIP Code demography,
the inability to describe true neighborhoods and communities with ZIP codes,
and their use in GIS systems and for target marketing.
Simply put, Zone Improvement Plan (ZIPcode) geography does not reflect true,
homeogeneous neighborhoods. Census tracts and especially block groups do,
by definition (although this can certainly change dramatically over the ten
years that pass before Census geography is updated). Zipcodes reflect merely
the convenience of the post office when delivering mail, and as such are poor
building blocks for a GIS. For example, the two sides of a street frequently
belong to different census tracts, but to the same zip code.
Zipcodes are also too large to provide much fine grain, even if they were
homogeneous and the population within each zip were evenly distributed. It
is simply a mistake to expect very many households in a zip code to conform to
the overall demographic profile for that zip. By contrast, the profiles of
households will relate much better to that of the Census block group to which
they belong -- and even then, much deviation is possible, especially in
neighborhoods and cities experiencing demographic shifts (redevelopment,
general plan amendments, gentrification, etc.) This is why so much has been
written and talked about recently regarding household-level data -- which has
its own inherent problems, another subject entirely.
