Remembering Sol Katz

Sol Katz, whose body of work at the US Bureau of Land Management and elsewhere marks him as a pioneer in the exchange and interchange of GIS data, passed away a couple of years ago now.
We continue to honor Sol's memory and contributions.

NEW! Visit our GIS In Public Health area!

Our GIS Website Ratings continue to be one of the most popular areas on the RPM Infonet.
In February 2000, we added several new measurements pertaining to user experiences on GIS websites.
Here's what we found for July, 2001.

GIS goes mainstream! It says so in PC Week.

Read between the lines of the Executive Order creating the National Spatial Data Infrastructure for a better view of the future of GIS.

Quick -- what's the largest database served over the Web? Yes, it's TerraServer, a joint project of Aerial Images, Inc. and Microsoft, a 3.5 terabyte database of aerial images of the U.S. and Europe. Sure, it's just to show off SQL Server 7, but so what? BTW, TerraServer is Aerial Images' trademark.

Atlas 4.0 lives! The 32 bit version of Atlas GIS is now 4 years old, has no practical number of vertices limitation, includes royalty-free geocoding and Crystal Reports, and can open MapInfo and ArcView formats as well as BNA and AGF. For a review of Atlas GIS 4.0, click here. ESRI no longer sells Atlas, but we do -- and at $295 for existing users and $795 otherwise, it's a compelling application and value. Contact us today to order your copy. And be sure to visit Atlas Place, your home on the web for all things Atlas.

For a truly immersive, up-to-the-minute GIS links experience, you definitely owe a visit to the (recently redesigned) Roelof Oddens Bookmarks at Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Be sure to visit the Map Collections Page, featuring what is likely the most exhaustive list of collections on the Web, and the Map Servers & Resources Page, a collection of map server links and resources.

For an example of applying map animations in business geographics, click here to view our series of animated Customer Distribution and Trade Area Maps!

If you are interested in map animations, you'll also want to check the Animated Map Of Historical US State Boundaries and much, much more on Karen Stephan's site.

For applications in criminology, you'll definitely want to visit Animations of Crime Maps Using Virtual Reality Modeling Language at the Western Criminology Review online. There is also an excellent international compendium of GIS and mapping links featuring animation, interactivity and virtual reality at the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research.

Also available now is a downloadable sample of our
MarketBank Market Potential Data for financial services.
