How Much to Pay for an English Sasha Doll
Debbie offers the following pricing guidelines for purchasing (or selling)
a Sasha.
"I have my own little system for valuing dolls that I try to stick to so
that I don't overspend no matter how badly I want a doll."
-
A clean naked doll with good hair and no tag or packaging but in very good
condition ---I'd pay up to $75
-
All of the above with an authentic Sasha outfit (not necessarily the one
the doll originally wore)---I'd pay up to $100
-
All of the above with a wrist tag---up to $125 ($150 for a large silver
and perhaps $175 for a gold).
-
All of the above with original clothes---$150-$225 depending on wrist tag.
-
All of the above with original packaging (not necessarily mint packaging)---$175-$300.
-
All of the above with absolutely mint everything---$200-$350.
-
And of course if it is a very hard to find an old doll from the 60's that
is in absolutely mint. For these, the Hiker, or Wintersports I might pay
up to $400, and I would go as high as $700 for the Princess.
Note: These price guidelines were made in 1996 - you will need to adjust
for inflation as appropriate.
How to Wash and Style Sasha's Hair
Kenneth Loyal Smith, Costume and Textile Conservator, gives us advice on
a safe way to style Sasha's hair.
-
Wash Sasha's hair with shampoo and then follow with a conditioning rinse.
-
Let the rinse stand long enough for the water-softener to coat the fibers.
This is not destructive, as the water-softening agent bonds to the molecular
structure with a weak bond, called a Van der Wall bond, which is removed
when the molecule is exposed to water again.
-
Or...use of an NON-perfumed fabric softener, I use Downy...one teaspoon
diluted in two cups of warm water, as an alternative conditioner
-
Rinse the conditioner, comb the hair to the desired style or put rollers
in, cover the head with a cotton sock and use a hair dryer set on low speed,
but with low heat (no heat does not help.)
-
Keep the dryer at least 8-10 inches from the head. The cotton sock wicks
the water from the hair and the dryer does not set the hair, as much a
speed the process.
-
Note: You actually can cause damage by allowing the hair to dry at room
temperature as this allows a chemical change as the water works its way
to the end of each fiber to dry. Oxidation causes a build up of bad stuff
on the ends of the fiber...fake hair, in this case. Quick drying, by using
a dryer, erases this problem.
"Try my method. I am a Costume and Textile Conservator with two masters,
one in chemistry and one in textile conservation. These are tried, proven
methods."
