A success story of an ADHD/ Dyslexic boy with a variety of symptoms post
repeated TBI’s
repeated TBI’s.
By Victoria Ibric, PhD, BCIAC, DABPS,
This paper introduces J.R., an 11 year old, male student who had a traumatic head injury
at the age of 18 months when he fell out of a second floor window. Post head trauma he developed a multitude of symptoms:
cognitive, emotional and physical. At birth he was a blue baby. Being a risk-taking child he had several falls. At the age
of 10 he was diagnosed with ADHD/Dyslexia and put on a series of unsuccessful attention deficit drugs among which, Dexedrine
kept him and his mother awake for 24 hours straight. He was evaluated at the
Irlen Institute and corrective eye filters prescribed without any benefit. In 1996, at the time of evaluation for Neurofeedback
(NF), he was on a low dose of Ritalin (15 mg). At the age of 11, even after multitudes of tutors, and special phonics programs,
this patient could not read, and had a special education aide with him for 5 hours a day to decode everything in the classroom.
At the time he had a GPA (grade point average) of 1.35. The mother reported that simple special education homework assigments
(20 minutes) took longer than two hours to finish and often ended in screaming matches. This child also suffered from asthma,
low self-esteem, short- term memory problems and night terrors.
Training was begun and by session 6, this client was recognizing letters and numbers. By the end of
the sixth week, he was reading three and four-letter words. Soon after, he also discovered the pleasure of reading a magazine
by himself. Memory problems slowly lessened and he was able to remember more than one thing at a time. Cognitive testing showed
constant improvement over the years
NF sessions were done on Neurocybernetics (NC), from October 1997 through March 1998. Starting
in July 1999, the training was done on ROSHI/ Brain Link and recorded on NC only. This is the picture above.
During
the ROSHI training the theta frequency was inhibited and stabilized. The changes produced showed longer lasting effects of
the training. Socially his life improved dramatically. He was having an easier time at school, with much fewer outbreaks of
anger and frustration. He was now able to sleep over at friends without any more high drama and memory problems were lessened.
Asthma was also controlled to the point where he has no need to carry an inhaler.
After 80 sessions of Neurofeedback, this patient was reading at a third grade level with
continuous improvement shown in all areas and a GPA of 3.51. By the end of eighth grade he had won two school awards 1998-99 for being one of the top
3 out of 125 special education students.
5 Year Follow-up: At the age of 16, he returned
for more training because he had trouble passing the written tests for driving school. He had 4 – one-hour sessions
on ROSHI in three days. While his mother read him the DMV test questions and they discussed the correct answers, the ROSHI
protocol AO [I] over the frontal areas was applied. As a result, three days later, he passed the DMV written exam on the first
try (missing only 3). At this same time he also improved his golf game significantly
(20 strokes) and made the golf team at school. By this time, this young man was also able to mainstream into many regular
high school classes.
7 Year Follow up: At age 18, he graduated
with his class, reading at 10th grade level, maintaining 3.5 GPA. He is now working full time and is enjoying a normal
life with plans for college.
