Rev. Jim Norwood founded the Tarrant County Lesbian and Gay Alliance in September, 1980, in response to the rise of the anti-gay
Moral Majority and the so-called "religious right."
Rev. Norwood, an ordained Southern Baptist minister who left that denomination when he was revealed to be gay, was affiliated
with the Metropolitan Community Church. He was sent to Fort Worth basically to shut down the failing Agape
MCC. Instead, in the four years that he was pastor, the church membership grew to over 200, and a new building was purchased,
which is still owned by the congregation.
We honor Rev. Norwood's memory for his courage during a time when gay people in Texas were expected to "shut up
and stay in the closet."
