Expert Advice for your Home Studio and Recording Projects

After over five years of bringing useful information about digital audio products to the Internet – FREE OF CHARGE – and hiding from the scores of e-mails I get every week asking me for free advice – I'm going to try something different.

The free information you've come to rely on will remain available here (there are thousands of you viewing the site every week), but for help with your individual setup, or for information and recommendations on what audio and computer equipment to buy, you'll need to e-mail me with your questions.

I'll need to charge a little for my time spent answering your questions – but I'm going to keep the price "bargain basement" low.

HERE'S THE DEAL:

If I can (and only if I can) answer your questions with useful information, I will provide you with a personalized consultation – for a fee of only $15 US (payable through a PayPal account). You can use this service to help solve problems or decide on gear, or to get general help on how to make your recordings sound more professional. Basically, you'll be getting a half-hour or so of expert consultation for just a very few bucks. I'm not a salesman, so I won't make recommendations based on selfish reasons. I only recommend equipment that I've used and liked or that has worked well for people I know who work in the audio production field. If you ask for my opinion on a particular piece of equipment, I'll do my best to give you a useful answer.

There is no other resource anything like this on the entire Internet. You can use this consultation service for help when you're really in a jam or in over your head (we've all been there... that's how you learn!). You know you'll never get the real scoop from the salesmen at the local music store or get individual attention from a book. This inexpensive audio consultation service is your "tech support of last resort" for your individual home studio and recording setup.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

  1. In that first e-mail to me, write in your questions as clearly and completely as you can.
  2. If I think I can answer your questions with truly useful information, I'll send you a few more specific questions to answer that will help me arrive at the best solutions for your situation. At this point, I'll ask you to make a payment of $15 US to me through PayPal.
  3. Once you've paid the $15 fee, and after I've read through your responses to my initial questions, you'll receive the answers to your questions, and you can ask me more questions as necessary.
  4. If I cannot answer your question, or the information is readily available elsewhere, I'll e-mail you back with any ideas I have that might help you find better answers - and you don't pay me anything.

That's it! Pretty simple, right? You only pay me $15 US if I can help you with your questions. If I can't help you out, you don't pay a thing.

Be sure to read through the Musician's Guide to Home Recording first, before you send your questions. You might find the answers you're looking for, and for free...

But if you're in a serious bind, or you're about to spend a bundle on audio gear and you don't feel you know enough about it to make a good decision · E-MAIL the Audio Helper · and I'll do my best to help you out.

Who am I?

Like many people in the music biz, I started out playing music. As a hopeful young guitarist, I played with some great musicians who taught me a lot about the art of making music – and great music is what it's all about, right?

In the last ten years, I've worked as the house recording engineer at the New School Jazz & Contemporary Music Program in NYC, worked in technical support and written manuals for Voyetra Turtle Beach, helped write the manual for Merging Technologies' Pyramix 3.0 hard disk recording system, and mixed and mastered a commercially released recording by a major jazz artist. I'm also a fanatic for great sound, so I've learned to repair vintage tube amplifiers and build my own audio gear.

I've installed computer networks (with both Mac and Windows systems), built many a PC and repaired/upgraded many others.

While working at New School Jazz, I had the opportunity to work with some of the best young talent from around the world, as well as a few truly gifted recording engineers such as David Baker, James Farber and Jon Rosenberg. It was quite an education!

At Voyetra Turtle Beach, I had the opportunity to study the audio industry from the inside, including customer service, marketing and the technical design process.

I continue to play guitar (jazz, mostly) and make recordings. I also design and build high-end tube audio equipment and the odd piece of studio gear. I've helped design equipment for Aprilsound Audio and have experimented with building phonograph preamplifiers and converting inexpensive Chinese condenser mics to vacuum tube operation. I'm currently working on my own Class-A, all-FET stereo line mixer and an all-tube, transformerless, balanced mic pre...
