MODERN CHAMBER MUSIC
Arthur Farwell (1872-1952)
Four masterpieces from the microfilm collection of this significant
post-Romantic American composer's works at the Eastman School of Music:
-
Quintet for Strings and Piano (1937). The first publication of this
major work by an important figure in American music. A worthy companion
to the quintets of Franck, Dvorak, and Roy Harris (35'). $50
-
String Quartet, "The Hako" (1922). A prize-winning evocation of a
Pawnee Nation ceremony, performed 1923 at the Coolidge Festival in Ojai,
California. In one movement (17'). $30
-
Piano Trio, Owasco Memories (1901). Five brief, light pieces
which evoke the turn-of-the-century mood of the Fingers Lakes region in upstate
New York (10').
$20
-
Solo Sonata for Violin in G Minor (1934). A very difficult, intense
four-movement virtuosic work: Wieniawski meets Ysaye (15'). $25
Ravel, String Quartet in F Major (1903). A corrected,
newly-engraved printing based on original sources, with bar numbers, lots
of cues, and manageable page turns. $50
"Bravo! What a beautiful edition, and so meticulously worked out! An
outstanding achievement." - Arbie Orenstein
-
Centenary Edition. No execution or interpretive markings added.
-
Daniel Guilet Study Edition, by Eugene Purdue. Based on the Centenary
Edition, with fingerings, bowings, and interpretive suggestions in the
French tradition, from Guilet's direct collaboration with the composer.
Faure, String Quartet Op. 121 (1924). A new edition preserving
and extrapolating the composer's uncompleted markings, to reveal the expressive
contrasts and North African influence not previously recognized in this
work. $30
Carl Nielsen, Viola Quintet (1888). Corrected and reset from
the centennial facsimile. $30
TEACHING AND STUDY
Ignace Pleyel, Fast Movements from Duos, Opus 8. Parts
or score for two violins or two violas. $10
Solo Cello: William (Willem) Van den Burg, 67 Etudes on the Beethoven
Quartets (1980).
Wm. Van den Burg (1901-1992), principal cellist for
Stokowski and for Monteux, from 1927 to 1950, composed these Etudes, one
for each movement of the quartets, as a monument to his modern approach
to the cello, drawing on all the quartet voices. The great musicians of
his day who were colleagues and personal friends, such as Menuhin, Pleeth,
Frank Miller, and Orlando Cole, lavished praise for his manuscript but
it found no practical use until this posthumously engraved edition.
$60
"These Etudes will not only assist cellists in mastering the technically
difficult passages in the quartets, but they will put the cellists into
Beethoven's stylistic frame." - Yo Yo Ma
Solo Viola: The 67 Cello Etudes transcribed and edited. Dedicated
to Van den Burg's brother Herbert, former principal violist with the St.
Louis Symphony Orchestra. $75
QUARTETS WITH TANGO FLAVOR
-
Larry London, California String Quartet (1974) (13').
A
gratifying 3-movement work by a former student of Terry Riley and Lou Harrison
combining the worlds of country music, Gershwin, Bartok, and India. Accessible
and attractive for advanced students. $20
-
Also available on rental for string orchestra.
-
Stravinsky, Concertino (1920). A new engraving in a much clearer
and more accessible edition to attract the present-day string player interested
in a short and humorous spice to an overly-conventional evening. With performance
suggestions to show its derivation from the Argentine-Paris tango craze
of the modernist era. $15
-
Eduardo Rovira (Buenos Aires 1925-1980), Tango String Quartet (Argentina,
ca. 1950). An evocative and original 3-movement concert piece by this
prolific composer and tanguero. $30
