September 23-25, 2004 - XPRS at Black Rock, with Aeropac
|
Not much memory of this event, but I did have the following launches:
- Flew the Enterprise 98 on a K550 - Great flight to ~3300 ft. Landed 50 ft from our camp - worked perfectly!!
Did discover later, that the main parachute charge moved the forward retaining ring (and the electronics cage)
aft ~6", until it was against the aft retaining ring. Careful "coersion" got the ring back into position, and epoxied
back into place. drove screws through the bulkhead as well, to hold in place
- Flew the Ariel on a US Rockets H330. There was no ejection. The rocket and the MAWD it contained
were destroyed.
-
Flew the WASP to a great flight on F21-8. Reached ~1900 ft, and recovered fine.
-
Flew the Enterprise 98 again, this time on an M1419. The rear body untied from the rear body, which fell 1100 feet.
A cracked fin and crinkled tube mean I don't get my L3 this time.

September 12th, 2004 - Fresno
|
Had a great time at Fresno this day. Here's the highlights
- Brought neighbors, friends, family, and kids. What a difference having a rooting section makes! They
ALL had fun.
- Flew repaired PML Io on a G80-7. Great flight, though it looked like the chute came out early. No damage,
though.
- Flew 4-fin Fat Boy on D12-5. Broke shock cord, and the nose cone took forever to come down. No wind, so no
problem! Easy repair.
- Flew 54mm Min Diam ("Hornet") on 38/480 AT motor - I300. Rocket ripped off the pad, and disappeared in the cloud
cover. Saw "event" at apogee, and lost it. LCO announced the rocket in back of the flight line, where I picked
it up - on the main parachute, coming down slowly. Gently settled to the ground 100 yards into a field. Yahoo!!!
All that work, and the MAWDs, paid-off. Success with electronic deployment.
- Flew 1/2A "Orange Bullet" on 1/2A3-4. Engine ejected after pushing off the nose cone. Came in ballistic,
but a little slower. Slight damage to body tube.
- Prepped, but didn't fly the 98mm "Enterprise". Just ran out of time. Darn.

My July 2004 trip to Fresno was "less than successful".
Here's the score card:
- 38mm Thunderbolt launched on AT I161. Forgot to turn on the Electronics, and it was launched into oblivion.
Couldn't find it. Bummer. Eventually found by James M, and returned. Thanks!
- 24mm "Arrow"-style rocket "Glowworm" on C11-5. Worked fine, but the altimeter reset at apogee, and calculated a
negative altitude.
- PML Ariel on an AT I211W. 2nd place in 4-way drag race, but the delay was too short (6 sec vs 10 sec), and the parachute
tore in several places. The rocket came down hard - chipped nose cone, holed the payload section, and mashed the engine
retainer. 2786 ft.
- 29mm "Arrow"-style rocket on an old AT E15-7. Good boost, but no ejection until after the rocket buried 1 foot in
the ground. What a mess. ~750 ft.
- PML Io on Econojet G35-7. "Bang!" Cato'ing motor blew out aft retainer.
- Estes "Wolverine"-clone on A10-3T - fine flight, though I thought I lost it at the site. Found it when I unpacked
at home.

Another "Less than successful" day.
The scorecard:
- 38mm Thunderbolt minimum diameter on H123. Lawn-darted, because I accidently drilled a hole in the MAWD capacitor.
Went 3 1/2 feet into the ground. Good thing there was a shovel.
- Estes "Wolverine" clone on A10-3T - unstable and tumbled on launch. No damage.
- "The Classic" - a Big Bertha-style rocket on a C6-3. Engine burned throught he side of the casing after the nozzle,
causing erratic flight. Very strange.
