Meeting Mintes

ROGUE VALLEY FLYERS.

August 1st 2007. Monthly meeting minutes.

The meeting was formally opened at 7.00 p.m. by the club President, Jamie Joswick.
There were fourteen members present at the meeting.

OLD BUSINESS.
July meeting minutes.
The July meeting minutes were unanimously approved, without change or comment.

Treasurer report.
Wray Freitas covered the details of the finances for months of June (as he was unable to do so last
month) and for July, including the data on the Float Fly. After all income and expenses, the balance
remains firmly in the black. Motions were made, seconded and approved for the financial reports for
both months.

Field Report.
Art gave the report tonight. As was reported last month, there was a break-in to the storage container
and Art is now able to confirm that the “gas can” and a tube of “tie-wraps” were the only items stolen.
He is in discussions with a security company about a new mechanism to install on the container to
make it more difficult for any further intrusions. (As a reminder, last month it was approved for the
expenditure of up to $300 to install a new security device).
Also Art has been attending to the weed control, especially on the runway and currently things are
looking good. In addition Art and George have been attending to the traps, spray etc. to kill off the
“yellow jackets” that have been a bit of a problem lately.
George reported that “The County” does not expect to do any type of work on the “cap” at our portion
of the field in the next year. They will however probably work on the field on the left end of the
runway where there has been some problem with water “ponding”.
Art brought up the topic of the potholes in the gravel road leading to the field. George stated that “the
County” is responsible for that road and he is having some discussions with them to try to have the
potholes filled.
There was also a discussion about the main gate and how heavy it is, making entry and egress
impossible for wheelchair bound members. Jamie reported that this was understood and is being
looked at to see if some sort of solution could be found.
Jamie made an announcement for members to be on the lookout for any suspicious persons in the area
surrounding the field. There are potential marihuana growers and they could be rather shady
characters. Do not confront them but report them to the Sheriff, Jamie or George, with if possible a
license plate number from their vehicle.

2007 Lake Selmac Float Fly.
Alan gave a very brief overview of the meet. The Float Fly took place on Saturday and Sunday July
21st and 22nd. Everything went very smoothly. It would have been nice if there had been a higher
attendance, but it appeared that the event was enjoyed by all pilots and spectators. Saturday’s weather
was unfortunately not the best with light drizzle until about 09:30 and then strong winds took over
after about 13:00 hours, but between then we were able to fly comfortably. Sunday was very nice with
a clear blue sky and absolutely perfect weather.
We had outstanding support from club members who helped with the organization and the logistics of
setting up, dismantling and transportation of all the necessary materials, so a very special thanks to the
following: Patricia Long, George Long, Wray Freitas, Art Kelly, Ozzie Tiefenbach, Len Barker, Jim
Stout, Jack Schaefer, Jack Medina, Ed Roseborough. (Sincere apologies if anyone’s name has been
omitted). A club cannot exist without this kind of commitment and support, so thanks again.

Patricia reported on the donations and ticket sales for the “raffle planes” and passed moneys over to
Jamie then Wray.

NEW BUSINESS.
By-laws documentation.
Jamie reported that the Executive Board is reviewing the By-laws and some possible updates may be in
the works. The plan is to bring the membership up to date on the By-laws at the September meeting
and then hopefully by October for all members to have hard copies of the updated By-laws document.

Upcoming events.
Alan brought attention to the “Norwest Fly Fest” Airshow that is taking place in Eugene on August
25th and 26th and passed around the flyer. (More info at: www.norwestflyfest.com )

Also the Redwood Empire Modelers Assoc. (REMA) has been in touch and Alan and provided their
newsletter which was passed around the table for all to see. They are having a “fly in” on August 10th
through 12th. Also they had suggested that the two clubs exchange electronic versions of the
newsletters. The RVF members were very happy with this idea, so Alan will follow up on this with
the REMA secretary.

Patricia restated the “Fantastic Flea Market” (Daily Courier yard sale) is coming up this weekend.
Certain club members are signed up to attend this, but as space is limited it could be a bit awkward if
too many members showed up and stood around. She does not mean to dissuade people from coming,
but just be aware of the limitations. Set up is at 07:15 (that is in the morning!). Club members may
sell any type of “yard sale” items, including modeling items, however you are totally responsible for
transporting your own items to and from the event and managing your own transactions. You must be
there at 2 p.m. for teardown.

George reminded the meting about the “Walk on the Rogue” event on September 15th. The scheduled
times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., however, if you are coming it will be better to be there before 10 a.m.
otherwise it will be difficult to park.

Also the “Oregon Air National Guard” base in Klamath Falls is having an “open house” on August
11th. This is free to the public. It is not an “airshow” but there are usually quite a few interesting
planes to see, static displays etc.

Float Fly safety concerns.
Patricia brought up her concerns about “non-flyers” wandering about in the “run-up” and “pilot area”
where we hold the Float Fly. There was a short discussion on this and pretty much agreed that in the
future we can improve the safety by arranging the entrance areas and placing more signs to make it
clear that the non-flyers need to keep separated from the pilots. We will need to make some additional
signs to accomplish this.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

The next meeting is Wednesday September 5th at the usual venue.
