BIZZELL/ HATTER - 12/09/01 -
- "Sallie
Bizzell Hatter daughter of Robert M. & Sarah Rutledge Harkness Nov. 07, 1867 to Jul.
13, 1947" is on a tombstone in a cemetery between
Forkland and Boligee very close to a home owned by Bear Bryant's son. (I am told.) I would
like to know Sallie's connection to my Bizzells (Mollie Cook McMillian /Oscar Bizzell) who lived in Clinton. I
suspect that her mother's relatives were Bizzells. I have many old articles from the
Atlanta papers and pictures of same regarding the Bizzells that I will gladly share if
someone will close this gap for me. -- Carolyn D. McCall

Early Land Patents - 12/02/01 -
- For those researching the
the early land patents in Greene County, Alabama, a valuable resource is the book GREENE
COUNTY ALABAMA RECORDS by Mrs. S.M. Marshall and Ms Elizabeth Wood Thomas, Willo
Publishing Company, Tuscaloosa, AL. The book has a list of about 1300 names of individuals
who received land patents in Greene County, AL between 1818 and 1832 that was compiled
from records in the courthouse at Eutaw, AL. Regards, Bill Pittman wcpittman@sprynet.com [Thanks, Bill.]
Circuit Court Records - 11/25/01 -
- I am
researching Ike (Isaac) Goldsmith. He lived for a time in New Orleans, LA and, according
to his 1892 New Orleans Voter Registration records, he was naturalized in Circuit Court,
Greene County, Alabama. Unfortunately, I do not have a more precise citation of this
naturalization record. If any
of you have access to the Circuit Court records for Greene County and can help me get a
copy of this record, I would be extremely grateful! I would be happy to reimburse you for
any out-of-pocket costs. -- "Ellen

CHAMBERS/ McCRACKEN- 10/07/01
-
- Someone recently sent me information from the new Greene County Heritage
book. The info sent to me states that Samuel Chambers married Elizabeth McCracken,
daughter of John McCracken, in SC. They had one child, James M. Chambers, and Elizabeth
died. Samuel then married Jane (Gamble) and settled in Greene Co., AL. They had several
children together. Samuel's burial place is unknown but may be Hebron because he
"willed" money or land to Hebron. A couple of items from the book conflict with
the information I have. From the estate of John McCracken, Samuel Chambers signed in
"right of his wife" Elizabeth. This was in the 1840s. So, it appears that she
was not deceased at that time. Also, Samuel Chambers died intestate, so he could not have
willed land or money to Hebron. I also have a pedigree chart from a granddaughter of James
M. Chambers in which she states that Elizabeth McCracken Chambers d. in 1841. Does anyone
know who submitted the information in the new Greene County book, or does anyone have any
ideas that might help explain the differences in the book information on
Chambers/McCracken and other research? Any help is greatly appreciated. -- Catherine

HEMPHILL- 09/30/01 -
- My great-great-grandfather William Hemphill received a land patent
in Greene County,Al. on October 1, 1835, and according to an account by Dr. Jacob Huggins,
"History of My Native Village" (Newbern) "In 1829, Messrs Harvey Tyndall
and Simpson Hemphill built the first store in this settlement, which was called by the
country people "Grab-All" thereby showing its character" It was built on
the east side of the Newbern-Uniontown road where the Prarie Rpad now intersects this
road." William came to Greene from Williamson County,Tennessee with his wife Jane
Cooper Hemphill, and she died when they lived there, but I have found no cemetery record.
James Simpson Hemphill who was a partner in the store in Newbern married Abigail Williams
in Alabama and had seven children born in Alabama before moving to Mississippi in the
early 1840s,but he never appeared on an Alabama census, and I have found no marriage
record. This is the toughest research I have encountered, and I will be grateful for any
help. Regards, Bill Pittman wcpittman@sprynet.com

New African American Site - 09/23/01 -
- Hello and thank you for being a Roots Web
County host for Greene County. I have a new link which I think would be appropriate for
inclusion in your County pages, under the census category and also in the African American
category if you have one or are planning to establish one. I have done partial
transcriptions of the 1860 slave census for your County, wherein I have transcribed the
names of the largest slaveholders in the County. I then have compiled surname matching
information for African Americans on the 1870 census, using the Heritage Quest African
Americans in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census CD. The resulting information is included in a
page I have established at Roots Web. My suggestion is that the link be named "Greene
County largest slaveholders from 1860 slave census schedules and surname matches for
African Americans on 1870 census". Your consideration and inclusion of this link will
be appreciated. Here is the link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ajac/algreene.htm

War Monuments- 07/28/01 -
- Hi, I am Chuck James from Montgomery, Alabama. My family is from Cullman and many
from old Winston County. One little side track from my hobby into Genealogy, is I have
become interested in all the civil war items and points of interest across Alabama. I am
trying to make a list by county, and one day make a web site or little book. My biggest
thing I am looking for right now are Confederate or Civil War monuments that many counties
have. I have found 13 so far and most are in little court squares in front of old court
houses. In doing this I now understand why Confederate Memorial Day was a big event in
Alabama. I see where the history came from. I was wondering if there is any in Greene
County. I like to travel and make photos and details of what exist. I have a friend Mike
Rhodes who once told me that in the cemetery in Eutaw, he thought there was a monument.
Think his dad was once Chief of Police in Eutaw. Could you help me out and tell me what
exists in Greene County. Is there a memorial somewhere in the county? I would appreciate
your help. Thanks. -- Chuck James CRJBAMA@aol.com

- 06/16/01 -Clinton Cemetery - 06/16/01 -
- Is
the cemetery beside the Presbyterian Church at the fork in the road going west toward West
Greene/Gainesville from downtown Clinton listed on your list by another name? We always
called it the Clinton Cemetery when I was living there in Eutaw. Your list of cemeteries
will be extremely useful to people especially folks who aren't able to come to Greene
County. I grew up on Prairie Avenue and still feel like that is the center of the world.
Unfortunately the present owners are not interested in selling the old place. Keep up the
good work and thank you for a connection to my past. -- Carolyn McCall cmccal@bellsouth.net
Greene Co. Lookups - 06/14/01 -

address for Mr. Horton, do you? I see that particular page hasn't been updated since
6/26/1997 - So that is probably why it is an old email address. Thanks.--Melissa McCollum mellymc@hotmail.com
