Township & Range Map - 11/05/00 -  - Just recently, I found some fairly concrete information that links my direct family with Green County, AL. Several BLM land records suggest that the family was in the area by 1825. I would like to know approximately where they lived so that I can identify where court records would most likely be archived. However, after a little researching and analyzing census records, I've noticed that some of the families went back and forth from Pickens to Greene from census to census. Whether they moved or the lines just changed is still unclear. One of the families that I am most interested patented property in what is now Sumter County and another was in what was described as Pickens. Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of a township & range map that would identify approximately where the property was located? I'm hoping the property wasn't in Pickens because their early records were destroyed. MINSHEW - 10/29/00 -  - Newit Minshew (or Newet or Newitt) received a land grand in Greene Co., AL on Mar 20, 1837. Adjacent to his grant, a likely brother, Charles Minshew also received a grant. Newit came from Greene Co., North Carolina (1830 census). By 1848 Newit had died leaving 3 orphans, Haywood, Lydia, and Elizabeth who ended up in the homes of John and/or Samuel Moore in Noxubee Co., Mississippi. As adults all three kids ended up in Leake Co., MS area (Haywood being in Neshoba Co. off and on). AL 1866 Colored Census - 10/7/00 -  - I  reviewed the document on Greene County and I did not see a listing for a BRUTON, yet according to the copy of the 1880 census report that I have, my father's slave relatives from Greene county, Al ; Sarah Bruton was 15 years old which meant that in 1866 she was one year old. The 1880 census report list her as having been born in Alabama. Moreover, her parents on the 1880 document, Adam and chaney Bruton were not on the 1860 listing.Is your list complete for 1866? - Samw50@aol.com

KERR/RODEN - 09/16/00 -  - I have been researching my Roden ancestors. Lorenzo Dowell Roden was my GGrandfather. He was born in Albertsville, Alabama Marshall County. What I would like to know if you have any info. on my GGrandmother Susan Jane Kerr, born 1878, also in Albertsville, Alabama, as she married Lorenzo in Alabama, or maybe west Texas. Susan and Lorenzo's last residence was Ringling, Oklahoma Jefferson County. Susan died in 1975, and Lorenzo died in 1955, both are buried in the Ringling, Oklahoma Cemetary 100f. I can't seem to locate Susan's parents anywhere, and i was told her fathers name was Job/Jobe Kerr, and on Susan's death certificate, it says her mothers name was Surry Kerr. UPCHURCH - 07/15/00 -  - While searching the Upchurch family in Alabama via the internet, I came across your information on the Union Christian Church Cemetary which contains several Upchurch names. I am looking for a cemetary registry containing the ancestors and siblings of a Calvin Upchurch (b.1828, d.1902). He is buried in the Williams cemetary in West Green(e), Alabama. (He is my great-grandfather.) I believe that he moved to Greene County from Pickens County. He was married to a Sarah Janette Childers who, with members of her family, is buried in the Williams Cemetary also. I have information that Calvin's father's name was Bartley or Barkley Upchurch (b. 1800 d. 1879) and Calvin's Grandfather was named Abel Upchurch (b.1775 d.1846). I just don't know where they are burried. From what I have been able to tell, he moved to Alabama from North Carolina sometime during the 1820's. GRIGGS Will - 07/09/00 -  - I am doing some leg work for an older man who works with me at the Memphis Post Office. He has called the County Court house there trying to get a copy of a John W. Griggs will.He was told it was over 400 pages long and would cost $1 a page.I thought this was an uncommonly long will and rather high cost for printing.Does the library or the Historical Society have copies of the Wills Book? UPCHURCH/ CHILDERS - 04/16/00 -  - I am trying to fill in some blanks in my information gathering of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother. He was Calvin Upchurch and married Sara Janette Childers. I know that they were buried in the Williams cemetary in West Greene, Alabama (I have visited the site). I am trying to work my way back down the family tree. Does anyone know when the Childers family moved to Alabama? It had to be about 1830. I believe that J. Childers and wife moved there from South Carolina. I don't know from what area of S.C. I know that J. Childers' mother Mary joined them but I don't know when or why. TONEY - 04/16/00 -  - I am looking for information on my Great-Great Grandfather. He lived in Greene County, married there in 1855 and after the Civil War moved to Mississippi, then Arkansas. My ancestor's name is William Lunsford Toney, he married Martha C. Kimborough in 1855. I am trying to find all information about his participation in the Civil War. I have traced a William L. Toney, who was a member of the 7th Alabama Cavalry Regiment, which was recruited in Greene County, but the records do not give middle name, or any other facts that will confirm that this William L. Toney is my Great-Great Grandfather. Additional information is that W.L. Toney had a brother, John F. Toney who was killed at the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Hicks - 04/16/00 -  - I am trying to find a Martha Hicks.who marriage records show married a Berry D Bunn in Green co in 1843.I believe Martha to be the Daughter of Tilmon Hicks who married Martha Jones in Green in 1822. Tilmons father Asa married to Sally Edwards was listed in the 1850 census as was Tilmon and his wife Martha Jones. Living with Asa and his wife was a Sarah A.E age 1 year The 1850 census of Pickens co shows a Berry B Bunn with wife Eliza and daughter Sarah A.E., this leads me to believe that this Berry B and Berry D are one and the same. But with records being as they are i feel that there are mistakes that can only be reasoned out. Hebron Cumberland Presbyterian Church - 04/01/00 -  -  Hebron Cumberland Presbyterian Church was located near Mantua. The church  disbanded about 1905 and the cemetery has been virtually destroyed over the years. Only a few of the original tombstones remain intact. Hopefully, somone may have transcribed the markers many years ago. I am seeking any information about the cemetery, the tombstones, and inscriptions from as early as possible. Broadnax Family - 03/25/00 -  -  I'm researching my mother's family, the Broadnaxes, for a book, and I've sent  an e-mail, but have not heard from, a professional genealogist named Kate DeFee, whom I found on an Alabama state web site registry. Ms. DeFee lists  both Alabama and Virginia as specialties, and these are the two states most  closely linked with my branch of the family. Is there anyone else anyone might   recommend for such a search if Ms. DeFee doesn't contact me soon? (Time is of the essence here.) What follows is a summary of what I've found thus far and what particular issues interest me most.

Harriet Ann Broadnax is my mother's name, her first name deriving from my maternal great-grandmother, Harriet Ann Means, whose family originated in Charleston, South Carolina. I mention my mother's middle name, "Ann," because it--like Agnes, Elizabeth, Henry, John, and William, among others--recurs among the Broadnax's given names, and "Ann" is always spelled without an "e" at the end, whether in the American or English branches of the family, which seems somewhat unusual. The earliest Henry occurring in any records was born in England in 1566.

Some Broadnaxes left the family home of Godmersham, Kent, in the very early 17th century, arriving in the Virginia colony before 1620, when Mary became the first Broadnax to be born on American soil. Edward, another early Broadnax, was born in the Jamestown colony in 1701. I would like to know more about the history of the Broadnaxes in Virginia--are we the same  Broadnaxes for whom Brodnax--a different spelling, obviously--County was named? what, if any, connection exists between the Virginia Broadnaxes and the Cocke family? I grew up hearing stories about my grandfather's ancestral home in America--the mammoth Bremo plantation in Virginia--which I know to have been owned by the Cocke family. Perhaps the two families intermarried . . . was there another plantation associated with the Broadnax family?

The Cockes--and perhaps this is no coincidence--began leaving Virginia for Greensboro, Alabama at about the same time that the Broadnaxes did, in the early 19th century. The Cocke family, as you probably know, was involved in the colonization movement and sent one group of their slaves to Liberia and another to Greensboro AL, hoping that the slaves could sustain themselves and thus eventually be manumitted or emanicipated. For the book I'm writing, I need to learn all of the details I can about the Broadnax involvement with slave-owning, which I presume occurred both in Virginia and in Alabama.

David Walker Broadnax is the first member of the family I can find for Greensboro; Henry W. Broadnax--a son? a grandson?--is recorded as having married Rachel M. Meriwether--sometimes misspelled Mewither--in Greensboro on 14 March 1857. My guess is that Rachel was from Virginia too, the Meriwethers having later married into Thomas Jefferson's family. Joseph Christopher Broadnax, my mother's father, was born in Greensboro, Alabama, around the turn of the last century. Joseph Christopher Broadnax's had two brothers, John, who moved to the Athens, GA area, and Henry, who moved to Dallas, TX. The father's name, I believe, was Henry as well.

To summarize, my three objectives are to learn about the history of the Broadnax family in Virginia, particularly their relationship to Bremo/the Cocke family and/or to the county named Brodnax and/or to any other Virginia places associated with my family; to discover how and why and when certain members of the Broadnax family in Virginia left for Alabama (to make more money in the new Black Belt cotton kingdom, I suspect); and, most important, the Broadnax family's involvement with slaveowning both in Virginia and in Alabama.

WARD/HUDSON- 01/22/00 -  - I have been looking for a Mary Ward born in AL on July 8, 1839. She married  Alfred Singleton Hudson (my great great grandfather) on September 27, 1860.  I have found a Marietta Ward of the correct age (daughter of John & Louisa  Ward) on the 1850 census of Greene Co., AL but I am not sure that this is  the right person. I'd appreciate any info that anyone might have. I do know  that Alfred and Mary were living in Walton Co., FL in the 1870 census. ARMSTRONG - 01/22/00 -  - I have been told that my G-Grand father was born in Muselshoal AL. I have since found that it is Mussel Shoals AL in Greene County. His name was James Perry Armstrong and he had a son born in GA named Floyd Acton Armstrong (b.5/11/1900). I'm estimating that he would have been born ca 1880. Any ideas would be appreciated. Robert and Nancy were on the 1850 census in Greene Co., AL.  They had living with them Henry age 9 and Fanny 3 mo. McGehee - 01/09/00 -  - My name is Sharon Pike and I'm the Secretary of the Meriwether Society. Recently we have found the diary of Dabney McGehee Of Greene County, who came to Alabama in 1816 with the Meriwethers. His diary covers 1816-1832 and is quite interesting. One of our members has scanned it and wants to put it online so that other researchers can find it easily. The diary mentions Eutaw and Erie but this family lived on a farm on the River. He tells of the river rising into his corn field. Other names mentioned are Chiles, Lipscomb and Woolsteinholm. They traveled with Esther's uncle Dr. Zachary Meriwether and his son Zachary Jr. Here's a Dabney McGehee's family so you know what I have on him:

HURST/ ROONEY - 01/01/00 -  - Can anyone tell me anything about the Rooneys in Greene Co,  AL?. My gggrandfather Elizah Hurst married Angelina Rooney in Green Co. and I know  where both are buried in Clay Co. Ms. I know nothing about the Rooneys/Roneys. I am researching the family of William Gray Little b. 19 Dec 1809 (birthplace uncertain at this time) and died 14 Mar 1889 in Marengo Co., AL I found my William Gray Little in the 1840 Greene Co. Census. He had lived in Georgia in 1830 and was on his way to Chambers Co. AL (in 1850 census) and then to Marengo Co. AL (there by 1860).
