We humans
are a stylish bunch, even in our nudity. Here on Miami Beach there are many statues
of nude women from the Art Deco era of the '20s to the '50s. Most of them, totally
absent of clothes, can be dated to their respective decade by the way the women's hair is arranged. So, even without clothes we wear our styles.
While looking back on the skinny-dippers of the Woodstock generation, notice the shoulder
length hair and beards on the guys, the long, straight, ironed hair on the girls. On
our black brothers and sisters it was the equally identifiable round Afro-bushes. See
my point? Without a stitch on, we know that the photo was taken in the '70s.
The clothing optional section of Haulover Park Beach in Miami-Dade county is very popular
with national and international tourists, as well as locals from several counties in South Florida. The beach is also popular with gay men from this metropolitan area, and on any given day they comprise
about half the people congregating on the sand and in the surf.
While sitting here each weekend, surrounded by mostly men, (most of whom - but not all - are
gay) I get a sense of community. Not so much a community based on sexual orientation,
but one based on men in their natural state. Almost tribal, we come together
and mill about naked. And, just as so many naked natives of Africa and South
America differentiate their tribe by wearing certain identifying markings or ornaments on their body, we each carry our own
such personal attire, even while nude.
When we go to the beach and strip off our clothes, we are in effect nude. But, for most of us there are at least some patches of hair that cover parts of our body. Of course there are shaved nudists who work on removing even that natural covering, revealing the fact
that naturists are not always entirely natural. Many wear these little tribal
markings and ornaments that show where they're coming from or what they're into, whether it be shaved pubes, tattoos, or pierced
body parts.
Much of this altering of the natural body goes against some of the traditional nudist values and many landed clubs still refuse to allow such people the use of their facilities. But on a metropolitan nude beach, everyone is allowed to come wearing their true identity,
whether it be the totally natural and unshaved furry back, or one of multicolored patterns, or just the pattern of the last
stylish bathing suit they wore. Years from now, people will see photos from the
nude beach in the last decade of the 20th Century and be able to date it by the style of tattoos, piercings, clothing patterns,
and ornaments being worn.
Such is the cosmopolitan nature of our nude beach at Haulover.
Here are a few examples of what some men wear on the nude beach .
