From 1987 to 1991, before Haulover Beach was established as Clothing Optional,
my nudist friends and I in South Florida Free Beaches could be nude at private parties, on chartered boat trips
off the coast and on the rooftop solarium at the Palms Hotel in Surfside. We could wear very skimpy thongs and women
could go topfree at 21st Street Beach on Miami Beach.

The club usually marched in the King Mango Strut, the irreverent
anti-parade in Coconut Grove.
And yes, ppl would actually look to see if they were really
naked under those barrels - they were!
National Nude Weekend was celebrated as nude as we could be
on the beaches of South Florida, and usually attracted media exposure.
A carry-over from the '70s, Body Painting was popular at our
beach events.

We would often rent a room at the Palms and enjoy the use of their Solarium on
the roof.

Street Beach
In the mid 1980s,
21st Street was quite a gay place. There was the Seagull Hotel catering to gays, and the 21st St. Beach was a magnet for lesbians
and gay men. Women could go top free with no hassles, and T-back bathing suites
and G-strings (anal floss) were the next-to-nothing attire. It wasn't a nude
beach, but as close as you could get.
So, in
our quest for body freedom we nudists were forced by the moralists to seek refuge on the gay beach, which was pretty
much ignored by the prudes. Strange Beachfellows, forced together by a common
enemy. But, the ambience was great, and if you remembered to move the G-string
around you could get an all over tan without so much as a pinstripe.
Rob's
not nude, the anal floss is not visible.
Always testing limits tho, in March 1989, we tried getting
away with 'horizontal' nudity. After all, it was showing the same skin that was allowed with a G-String.
But, you know how that goes. Next thing you know ppl
were sitting up and even going into the surf naked. We were finally told to stop it by the Beach Police.
Did get a few pix of our daring nude-in.
Sometimes, we even put on clothes for events.
