Informed of the shooting just minutes before he is scheduled to speak in a ghetto section of Indianapolis, Kennedy is advised by police not to enter the neighborhood. When RFK chooses to go ahead, the police refuse to accompany him. Kennedy informs the stunned crowd of King's murder, and then delivers an extemporaneous eulogy to the slain civil rights leader. "Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago," says Kennedy, "to tame the savageness of men, and to make gentle the life of the world." That night, while violence erupts and fires burn in virtually every other American city, Indianapolis remains quiet.

--In May 1968, RFK scores impressive victories in Indiana and Nebraska, only to suffer a stunning setback in Oregon at the hands of Eugene McCarthy at the end of May. RFK announces that he will drop out of the race if he fails to win the June 4 primary in California.

Kennedy is taken first to Central Receiving Hospital, where doctors manage to revive him. From there, he is sent to Good Samaritan Hospital, where a team of surgeons operate in an attempt to remove a bullet that has lodged in Kennedy's brain.

--At 1:44 am, June 6, 1968, Robert Francis Kennedy dies at the age of 42.

--On June 8, 1968, after tens of thousands of mourners file past his casket, a funeral mass for Robert Kennedy is held at New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral. The mass is highlighted by an emotional eulogy delivered by his shattered brother, Senator Edward Kennedy.

--After the funeral mass in New York, Robert Kennedy's body is taken by train to its final resting place in Washington, D.C. An estimated one million people line the tracks between New York and Washington in silent tribute. Upon arrival in Washington, the body is taken by funeral procession to Arlington National Cemetery, where after a brief nightime ceremony, Bobby is laid to rest.
