Here are some of my favorite images from the Apollo 11 recovery.

 |
On July 23, the USS Hornet (CVS-12) steams at high speed towards the Apollo 11 splashdown and recovery site
in the mid-Pacific Ocean.

After the decontamination process, the first Apollo 11 astronaut sits in the Billy Pugh rescue net waiting to
be hoisted to the recovery helicopter. The kapton foil covering Columbia glistens like gold in the early morning
sunlight.

During a simulated recovery exercise, UDT LT Clancy Hatleberg leaps into the water from HS-4 helicopter #66. Clancy
was the "decontamination" swimmer who help ensure the quarantine against moon germs.

President Nixon welcomes the three astronauts back to earth, while they are in the NASA quarantine trailer (MQF) in Hornet's
hangar bay. From left to right - Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin.
