SOME DESCENDANTS OF JOHN A. VAN EPPS

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN A.VAN EPPS died 1816 in prob. Genesee Co., New York. He married DEBORAH HOUSMAN.

This family was originally in Vermont. John served in the War of 1812, and moved to western New York in 1813.

Child of JOHN VAN EPPS and DEBORAH HOUSMAN is:

i. WILLIAM H. VAN EPPS, b. 12 August 1812, Schenectady Co, New York; d. 8 October 1877, Dixon, Lee County, Illinois.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM H. VAN EPPS was born 12 August 1812 in Schenectady Co, New York, and died 8 October 1877 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. He is included in the family plot in East Bethany (Presbyterian) Cemetery, East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York, where his headstone reads merely "William H. VanEps 12 Aug 1812 b. Schenectady NY."

He married (1) CHARLOTTE R. CHURCHILL, daughter of JOSIAH CHURCHILL and CHARLOTTE RUMSEY, b. 6 May 1813 prob. in Genesee Co., New York and d. 21 August 1848, prob. Genesee Co., New York. Charlotte is buried in the East Bethany (Presbyterian) Cemetery, East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York; her headstone reads "Charlott R. (Churchill) VanEps Wife of William H. VanEps; dau. of Josiah & Charlotte Churchill." (Her parents, stepmother Harriet, brother Josiah Jr., and half-brother Charles H. are all buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bethany, Genesee Co, New York.) Charlotte's parents moved from Connecticut to Vermont before the Revolution and afterwards were among the early settlers of Genesee Co., New York. Her father fought in the war of 1812.

He married (2) MARY A. PECK 1850 in East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York. The 1880 Lee County IL census lists Mary as living with her daughter Louise and son-in-law George STEELE; it also indicates that Mary's parents were born in New York (and quite likely in Genesee County). She d. 27 December 1887.

William was educated at the Wyoming Academy. He first came to Illinois in 1837, locating in Fulton County, but later returned to New York. He settled in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, in 1854, and was a prominent merchant there for over twenty years.

i. WILLIAM HENRI VAN EPPS, b. 18 December 1842, East Bethany, Genesee Co, New York; d. 28 July 1930, Dixon, Lee Co., Illinois

ii. MARION VAN EPPS, b. 21 October 1838 prob. East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York; d. 16 January 1842, Bernadotte, Fulton Co., Illinois. His headstone in East Bethany (Presbyterian) Cemetery, East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York, reads "Marion VanEps son of William H. & Charlotte VanEps."

iii. ELLEN FRANCES JOSEPHINE VAN EPPS, b. 6 March 1837, Brockport, New York; d. 12 September 1838, Fulton Co., IL. Her headstone in East Bethany (Presbyterian) Cemetery, East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York reads "Ellen Frances Josephine VanEps dau. of William H. & Charlotte VanEps."

iv. ROAMA ADELIA VAN EPPS, b.16 August 1845, Bethany, Genesee Co., New York; d. 11 February 1846, prob. Genesee Co., New York. She is buried in East Bethany (Presbyterian) Cemetery in East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York. Her headstone reads "Roama Adelia VanEps, dau. of William H. & Charlotte VanEps."

Children of WILLIAM VAN EPPS and MARY PECK are:

v. LOUISE PECK VAN EPPS, b. abt. 1851, East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York; d. 17 November 1926 in Dixon, Lee Co., Illinois.

vi. KATIE VAN EPPS, b. abt. 1857, prob. Dixon, Lee County, Illinois; d. 7 March, 1862, prob. Dixon, Lee Co., Illinois.

Generation No. 3

3. WILLIAM HENRI VAN EPPS was born 18 December 1842 in East Bethany, Genesee Co, New York, and died 28 July 1930 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. He married LEAH EMERY 6 December 1877, daughter of JACOB EMERY and LENA -----. She d. 9 February 1931 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois.

William was educated at the University of Chicago, and served with the 1st New York Marine Artillery, Co. B., during the Civil War. He also became involved in the mercantile business, with concerns in California, Oregon, Dakota Territory, and other parts of Illinois before returning to Dixon and concentrating his efforts there.

i. CHARLOTTE ISABEL VAN EPPS, b. bet. 1878 - 1892, prob. in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois.

4. LOUISE PECK VAN EPPS was born abt. 1851 in East Bethany, Genesee Co., New York and d. 17 November 1926 in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. She married GEORGE STEEL(E) 11 July 1871, son of GEORGE STEELE and ANNA MORRISON.
