Below is a synopsis of my Tarrance line. My line of descent is indicated in orange text. Not all information is included here; I have left out info, for example, that concerns living persons. Please email me if you have questions, comments, or would like information regarding sources. SOME DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN TARRANCE 1. BENJAMIN TARANCE was born 29 August 1828. (Birthplace variously given as either AL, GA, or TN). He married ELIZABETH EVANS 29 December 1860, probably in Walton, Co., FL., daughter of ENOS EVANS and KAZZIAH ----. Children of BENJAMIN TARANCE and ELIZABETH EVANS are: 2. i. ROBERT NEWTON TAR(R)ANCE, b. 31 October 1861; d. 17 February 1933, DeFuniak Springs, Walton County, Florida. ii. VICTORIA TARANCE, b. 14 December 1864; d. 22 December 1864. Biographical Rosters of Florida Confederate and Union Soliders 1861-1865, vol. 1 (ed. David W. Hartman and David Coles) has this to say about Benjamin's military service: "3rd Cpl. Benjamin Tarrance enlisted 28 February 1862 at Camp Walton. He was promoted 3rd Sgt. 30 June 1863 and was wounded in the leg at Chickamauga 20 September 1863. He was paroled as 4th Sgt 1 May 1865 at Greensboro, NC." Benjamin fought with the First Florida Infantry, Co. D ("Walton Guards"). Here's the family mystery! Benjamin never made it home to DeFuniak after being discharged. Family legend says that Benjamin headed to his parents' in TN (or AL) to settle their estate. Returning home with his inheritance, he stopped for the night at an inn in AL. His horse was found the next morning, but he and the inheritance were never seen again. Makes for a great story, doesn't it? Like most good stories, it remains unproven. Benjamin did write a letter to Elizabeth telling her that he was on his way home, and explaining his errand, but I haven't seen it. The letter is believed to be in the hands of an elderly relative. We haven't had much luck getting a copy. Sigh… Elizabeth m. 2nd Charles Edward INFINGER 13 May 1869. Charles was b. 8 February 1843 in Alabama, and enlisted in the same company as Benjamin, on the same date. He was also discharged in Greensboro on the same day as Benjamin Children of ELIZABETH EVANS and CHARLES EDWARD INFINGER: 3. i.
