Here you'll find more information about the STEEL(E) surname in my family tree. WHEN/WHERE: Illinois, roughly 1830-present. This Steel(e) branch is thought to have originated in Scotland (possibly Aberdeenshire), with George Steel, who settled in Chicago in the early 1830s. Some early biographies report that many of his siblings went to Canada instead of the US (see tree for more info). The family seems to spell the name both Steel and Steele.
