Below is an overview of the NIEUWENDORP surname in my family tree. Hendrik NIEUWENDORP and his family came to the US in 1847, sailing on the Nagaski from Rotterdam, The Netherlands on 11 April 1847. The family was from Dordrecht. (Click here for some pictures of my 1994 visit to Dordrecht.) After arriving in Baltimore, the family travelled with the rest of the Dutch settlers overland to St. Louis, spending some time there before a colony was ultimately established in Iowa. For questions, comments, or to say hi if you think we're related, e-mail me! Descendants of Christian Niuewendorp Generation No. 1 1. CHRISTIAAN NIEUWENDORP died 1 September 1820, likely at Dordrecht. In May 1801, he married JENNEKE DE MEER, a daughter of HENDRIK DE MEER and JENNEKE DE KONINGH who was christened at Dordrecht 24 March 1773. Child of Christiaan Nieuwendorp and Jenneke De Meer:
Generation No. 2 2. HENDRIK NIEUWENDORP was born 7 April 1802 at Dordrecht. On 18 December 1823, he married LIJNTJE VAN PELT, who was born in 1796 at Dubbledam, a village near Dordrecht. Lijntje died on 1 February 1842 at Dordrecht. Henrik married IDA BIKKELIE on 1 May 1844; she was the daughter of JELLIS BIKKELIE and GEERTRUI HOEZO. Hendrik and his first wife apparently lived in Dubbledam for many of the years after their marriage, as at least three of their children were born there. They were living in Dordrecht proper in 1840. Children of Hendrik Nieuwendorp and Lijntje Van Pelt:
Child of Hendrik Nieuwendorp and Ida Bikkelie is:
Generation No. 3 3. CHRISTIAAN NIEUWENDORP, b. 20 December 1827 or in 1829 at Dubbledam, The Netherlands. He married NELTJE VAN DER MEER on 11 May 1854 in Marion Co., Iowa. He died 17 February 1904 at Orange City, Sioux Co., Iowa. Children of Christiaan Nieuwendorp and Neltje Van Der Meer:
There are likely other children in this family than those listed above; an 1880 Sioux Co., Iowa census record of a family presumed to be this one also lists Isaac, age 15; Mary C., age 12; Henry, age 9; and "Christinee", age 4. Isaac and Mary C. are listed as being born in Oregon, while the others in Iowa. The ages for children "Janie" (17); "Anna" (6); and "John" (1) do appear to match, while son Frederick would not yet have been born at the time of the census. However, more research is obviously needed to confirm this information. Generation No. 4 4. "JENNIE" NIEUWENDORP, b. 18 May 1863, probably in Marion or Sioux Co., Iowa. Jennie married (GERBEN) GERRIT POPMA. See the POPMA family tree for more information and a listing of their children.
