"Profiling Wayne D. Williams & Richard Jewel": Response to Fitting the Profile by Burke O. White, 12-11-96

First of all I have a problem with you lumping the Wayne Williams case and Richard Jewel because the natures of the crimes are so completely different. Part of making a successful profile of a criminal is High Consistency, which Williams provided in killing 12 people and Jewel or whoever may have done the Olympic bombing provided no consistency. Since you're so obviously unversed in criminal psychology I'll define that for you. High consistency is basically repeating the crime in different situations, obviously the olympics is only happening in Atlanta and to my knowledge there's been no forensically similar bombings in the Atlanta metro area. Forensics is also something that you, in your rambling editorial, bashed as if it wasn't something scientifically proven. Hell, forensics is something to base other "softer" sciences authenticity on not something to doubt with your pathetic assumptions. You cast doubt on Williams guilt on whether Jewel did the other bombing which is, simply put, retarded. The hair and carpet samples used in the conviction and prosecution of Wayne D. Williams were forensically sound. One of the defenses lawyers tried to use the same silly argument that she too had green carpet in her office and should she also be considered a suspect. The forensics team did an analysis of her carpet to prove a point and they found her carpet to be completely different from Wayne Willams carpet, plus she didn't a have a dog whose hair matched the hair found on the bodies. She wasn't seen stopped on a bridge when a loud splash was heard either, Wayne was. Nathanial Cater's body was found down stream. Are you telling Nathanial's parents that because Williams was profiled that he didn't kill their son. That he didn't strangle him. That he didn't throw his body in the back of his car with dog hair and throw him in the Chattahoochee river like a piece of garbage. Tell me you're not willing to stop profiling all together if it fails once. These victums have rights, these victums demand justice. I believe that Wayne Williams killed those twelve boys, that the forensic evidence proves it and that yes he fit the profile, but ultimately him being on that bridge got him arrested. He wasn't convicted do to any profile and Jewel wouldn't have been either. It's ludicrus to smack Wayne Williams and Richard Jewel together because they both lived in Atlanta and were profiled. The psychological nature of the two crimes are dissimilar and thus profiling them is a unique job. Yes, Jewel may be innocent, but Williams is not. Yes, profiling isn't perfect, but it never leads to a conviction based solely on it's specifications and it works most of the time. Next time do a little research before you stick your ego in your mouth.
