The Learner

Reflections on the Learner

A teacher's personal beliefs about the students will directly effect the educational environment. Students are a mixture of their culture, community, and capacity (the three C's). As an educator, I must be aware of the implications of the three C's in education while promoting respect and morality in my classrooms. In my future classroom, I plan to exemplify socially-acceptable morality as well as respect for each of my students. Each student offers my classroom an exciting opportunity for new growth, incite, and ideas. By emphasizing Vygotsky's idea of the social context of the learner, I will interact and attempt to understand the world of my learners. Therefore, I will be able to teach to each students' strength and prepare them to enter into the real world. To prepare my students to enter the world as socially-acceptable beings, I plan to explore morality and social issues within my content area. Furthermore, I plan to emphasize the diversity of my classroom through varying beliefs, ideas, and cultures. Finally, I intend to explore how to be a morally-acceptable educator in a secular, public environment without jeopardizing or emphasizing my beliefs.

Multiculturalism and the Classroom

After reading an article by Professor Lucía T. Varona, I began to think of ways to integrate multiculturalism in a Spanish classroom. Although there are many ways to discuss multiculturalism in a foreign language classroom, there is no better opportunity for the students than to have direct contact with a Spanish-speaking individual. Prof. Varona uses this idea in her college Spanish conversation class with much success; I have begun to think about ways to integrate her ideas into a high-school classroom.

Getting to Know You

These are exciting possibilities to have the students get to know each other and myself as well.

  • Meet and greets: Students would introduce one student to the full class after a brief interview session. They will focus on hobbies, past experiences, and one memorable event.
  • Class Mixer: Here, students fill out a questionnaire that focuses on various exciting experiences (i.e., Owns a parakeet, Has traveled to Spain, Has watched a movie in Spanish).
  • Private Interviews: Students meet with the teacher during lunch time, before, or after school.
  • Essay/Journal Entry: Students will explore introducing themselves through writing, preparing them to enter the real world and create a resume.
  • Artistic presentation: Students will artistically present themselves, through song, dance, or drama (or other artistic forms).
