V.
Lesson Mode: Expository/Ausubel model
First,
relate to class, via handout/advanced organizer the following:
-
Subject/verb agreement in English
-
Verb conjugation in English
-
Subjects in English
-
Subjects in Spanish
-
Verb conjugation (for –ar verbs) in Spanish
-
Subject/verb agreement in Spanish (via verb chart)
Second,
teacher will direct students in how to fill out an –ar verb chart.
Third,
have students work in groups (teacher will use previously organized groups
made up of heterogeneous learning abilities, outlooks, cultures, and beliefs)
to complete a few –ar verb charts for standard verbs.
Review quickly the correct format for filling out charts with class.
Fourth,
student groups will read a selected text of literature. Students will highlight/circle/select
the conjugated –ar verbs present in the text.
Fifth,
students as a collective group will listen to distinguish AR verbs in conversation.
Sixth
(if time), students will continue working in groups to relate a story using
pictures as guides and using conjugated AR verbs.
Homework:
Students will complete conjugated verbs in simple sentences and paragraphs.
VI.
Lesson Content:
-ar verbs are conjugated as
follows:
yo
-o nosotros/as -amos
tú
-as Vosotros/as -áis
él,
ella, Ud.-a Ellos,
ellas, Uds. -an
To conjugate:
Drop the -ar and
add the ending (hablAR --> habl
+ ending)
Subject/verb agreement:
Verbs will conjugate according to the verb
chart above. In other words, all I (yo) conjugate in -ar verbs w/ -o
ending, etc.

Activity
|
Student
Activity
|
| A.
Motivation: 1.) I will explain that we know how to conjugate “to
be” sentences but not other verbs. In order to begin this, we need to
know what a verb is.
2.)
Teacher will relate that the “to be” verb is irregular (unusual because
of the way it is conjugated).
3.)
In Spanish, there are three verbs: AR, ER, and IR verbs. We will only
look at AR verb endings today.
|
1.)
Students will respond with definition of verb in English (action word).
2.)
Students will conjugate “ser” to remind them how to conjugate.
|
|
B.
Development: 1.) As we saw in “ser”, verbs are conjugated according
to their subjects. What are the subjects in Spanish?
2.)
Today, we will only look at the AR verb endings.
3.)
This is how to conjugate an AR verb (write out how to conjugate verb
on board).
4.)
Now, let’s coordinate subjects with verb endings. Let’s fill out a
verb chart to see how verbs are conjugated. (Proceed to fill out AR
verb chart)
5.)
Now, lets see how this plays out in real life. Let’s look at
the verb Hablar. What does Hablar
mean?
6.) Good, to speak. Now, let’s conjugate Hablar
in another verb chart to see how it cooresponds
with our master verb chart. (Teacher conjugates as students copy down
on multiple verb chart page)
7.)
As you can see, it’s quite simple. You drop the AR, and add the appropriate
ending in place of AR. Let’s try another verb. What other AR verb
do we know from this chapter or a past chapter? (conjugate on verb chart)
8.)
Let’s practice on our own. Get into your large groups and practice
filling out these selected verb charts.
9.)
Now, let’s see how AR verbs appear in text. As a group, find the AR
verbs in this dialogue.
10.)
We’ve looked at AR verbs in composition and in text. Now, let’s try
listening for AR verbs. As a group, raise your hands when you hear
an AR verb in the following conversation. (Repeat conversation if necessary).
|
1.)
Students will respond in orderly fashion by reciting the subjects in
Spanish.
3.)
Students will copy AR verb conjugations into notes.
4.)
Students will receive verb chart and follow teacher as the class fills
out a general verb chart for AR verbs.
5.)
Students will respond as a group with the English translation.
6.)
Students copy the conjugation of Hablar.
7.)
Students offer new verb and copy its conjugation.
8.)
Students will relocate and fill out verb charts in large groups. They
will check their work with an overhead displayed after a work period.“
9.)
Students will work as a group to find the AR verbs in the text.
10.)
Students will individually raise hands as they hear the AR verbs.
|
|
C.
Closure (Summary): Now, we’ve explored AR verbs in all their various
contexts. Let’s try to work on conjugating our verbs in another format
- sentences. The idea here is the same as before in our verb chart.
When the subject is seen, you conjugate the verb according to that subject.
(teacher will write simple sentences).
|
Students
will respond with appropriate conjugation of verb.
|
|
D.
Assignment: Students will complete various written exercises to conjugate
AR verbs in sentence and verb chart format. If time permits, students
will work with a partner sitting close by them to relate a story using
the Fotonovelas page.
Homework:
Exercises 3 through 6 in workbook.
|
Students
will work at tasks to worksheets and will work with partners to create
a fotonovela.
Homework:
Students are expected to complete thoroughly and return next day.
|
|
E.
Evaluation: Teacher will review written exercises as homework. Also,
teacher will wander around the room listening to students (but being
careful about correction). Teacher expects students to achieve a fifty
percent (50%) profiency rate today.
