PLANETARY News

Bad Signal, Warren Ellis' stream-of-consciousness email series, has given a few Planetary updates over the course of the last few years. Here are some assembled comments talking about the final few issues of Planetary, with the most recent entries (bottom) addressing 27, the final issue. Text is authored by Ellis and pulled from Bad Signal, except where otherwise indicated:

I'm actually at the point now where I can clearly see the end of PLANETARY. I've known roughly how it's going to wrap up for some time. But I'm nine or ten pages into the new script (24), and right away I've wrapped up the connections between the Hong Kong cop, the Melanctha issue and John Leather, hopefully clearly explicated what the Century Babies do, explained why the Four let Planetary live, given a fairly strong hint about what The Drummer is, and described the above and below of the protective systems existing around life on Earth in the Planetary "universe". In short, it feels like it's nearly there.

By the end of July (2005), PLANETARY will be pretty much done, save for the aftermath/closing issue, which I may have taken off the schedule and released a few months after #26 as a coda.

--

October '05
Now halfway through script for penultimate issue of PLANETARY, which is #26. I laid the plans for the last half of this issue back during the first year of the book. It almost seems too simple, now, as I connect up the dots. Hopefully it'll be satisfying. Not every mystery associated with the book will be tied up; life's like that, and some of the ideas are more interesting as mysteries than as solutions.

--

November '05
I want to break two new projects over this period, and then wheel into the last half of PLANETARY 26 on Tuesday. 26 is the big finish, but the penultimate issue -- 27 will follow a few months later, an aftermath issue that tops off the series.

--

November '05
PLANETARY watchers will be glad to know that I now have 26 all laid out, and it looks like it fits in 22pp and everything. People should start getting used right now to the idea that I'm not going to explain every single thing in the series. Some things work much better as mysteries. The explanations just aren't as interesting. Dowling's personal abilities, for instance, are much more interesting as whispered fragments and inferences than they are as plain depictions. The denouement, however, does tie in things from the early issues.

I threw out the last six pages the other day as being too AUTHORITY-like, not Snow enough. Scott Dunbier keeps freaking me out with comments like, "no pressure, it just has to live up to the last six years of expectations." Throwing that shit out of your head and just getting on with telling the story becomes difficult. And the last six have to solve a last-minute complication in 25.

PLANETARY 24... begins what was a horrific process of drawing some of the disparate strands of the book together. 24 and 25 were among the hardest scripts I've ever had to write.

--

February '06
Mostly, the weekend (following February 17th) will be taken up with rewriting issues of ULT EXTINCTION and PLANETARY, because I didn't like pieces of them. Both are jobs I sort of sat on at the end of last year -- they were done if they needed to be, if you know what I mean, but I wasn't completely happy with them. I think, I hope, they'll be better for a couple of months' rumination. We work so fast in this job that sometimes you just have to live with the quickly-made decisions...

#25... covers a lot of what John Stone's been up to. The episode ties up a couple more things and introduces a twist.

--

June '06
Old news: I finally got the back end of PLANETARY 26 the way I want it, so now it's on Cassaday's desk, for a probable autumn release. 26 finishes the main story. There'll be a 27 as an epilogue at some point, but 26 closes the main business of the book.

--

July '06
I imagine I'll finish PLANETARY 27 sometime during the week. It's roughly laid out, and there's no rush for it, but I might just get it out of the way. 26, which John's probably drawing right now, finishes the story. 27 is just an epilogue. So I'm essentially done now. The epilogue just ties things off in a ragged little bow.

--

September '06
PLANETARY: on track, so far as I know. October, I think. And then it's all done bar the aftermath issue, which is in hand.

--

October '06
Why is it that only mentally ill people like PLANETARY? Seriously. A dozen times a day I get emails or MySpace messages from absolute lunatics who cannot spell or form sentences demanding PLANETARY.

--

October '06
Just got my comps of DESOLATION JONES 7. Comps of PLANETARY 26 should be imminent. Preparing myself for the massive amount of bitching on the latter.

--

February '07
PLANETARY's coda will be done when it's done -- it's part-written right now, but it's not a priority while I'm wrangling some other unrelated crises that I'm not mentioning here yet. Work crises, I mean.

--

March '07
No updates on PLANETARY. We're working.

--

March '07
PLANETARY epilogue is in the form of a pile of notes that I need to time.

--

March '07
Been writing some PLANETARY. Such hard fucking work. Took me two hours to write a piece the other day and I ended up with 500 words. I can do 1000 words/hour when I'm writing journalism or a novel. Bah.

--

June '07
Have started PLANETARY 27 for the fifth time. This one should be the charm. Trying to strike the right tone. Should have it in over the weekend, with luck. It's all sitting there as a huge stack of note files, everything the story has to do, but that's not the actual WRITING.

--

June '07
Almost ten years to the month that John Cassaday and I had our first conversation at San Diego about creating a new series: I have just completed and delivered the full script for PLANETARY #27, the final issue of the series.

I am now going to get drunk and find something to have sex with. I'm home alone, so the chinchilla has a right to look nervous.

Done. Never ask me anything about it again. DONE.

June '07
Scott Dunbier, longtime Planetary editor, posted this comment on Issue 27's script to the DC Message Boards: "Thought I'd chime in on this. Warren has mentioned before that I told him this has to be the best thing he's ever written. That was a lot of pressure to put on the guy, I know. But at the end of the day the SOB actually pulled it off. The ending of Planetary is absolutely beautiful, I can't imagine any of you being disappointed."

--

November '07
John will crack into PLANETARY 27 early next year -- he has many important commitments.

--

January '08
The office says John starts PLANETARY 27 soon.

--

June '08
Late last night, Wildstorm informed me that John Cassaday has commenced drawing PLANETARY 27. Please don't respond to this -- I don't need the listserv breaking. Just know and be happy. I have no word on what else is on John's plate right now, so I don't know how long it'll take or when it'll see print. It's not the easiest script in the world to draw, as I recall.

--

June '08
At Wizard World Chicago, during a Q&A session, Ellis mentions that Planetary 27 might be finished in time for a 2008 "Christmas present."

--

September '08
Heard from John Cassaday over the weekend -- sounds like he's about halfway through issue 27 of PLANETARY.

--

December '08
John seems to now be into the last half of #27.

March '09
Just heard from DC that John Cassaday has finished PLANETARY #27. Ravens have left Tower Of London. (via Twitter)

April '09
While I was in London getting bladdered being a responsible writer yesterday, I got an email from DC Wildstorm to tell me that John Cassaday was, apparently without warning, uploading the complete art for #27 into their FTP space. I now have those pages on my computer. #27 is all done sans the cover. (via WarrenEllis.com)

April '09
I got some lettered pages of PLANETARY 27 the other day. Laura's colouring it right now, although of course it has to fit around her own incredibly busy schedule. It'll arrive in Previews when it's ready.

Well, Bugger Me, It's A Colour Page From PLANETARY #27. (Via WarrenEllis.com, on the release of a color version of Issue 27 page 18.)

WildStorm Senior Editor Ben Abernathy comments on the final issue in a blog entry from The Bleed: "I would never have thought, all those years ago reading that short story (the Planetary preview story - RDG), that someday I would be a senior editor at WildStorm Productions overseeing the final issue of this incredible, defining work. It's taken some time to put all the pieces together, but I think it's going to be a satisfying conclusion for all the fans who've patiently (and some impatiently!) waited all this time."

I just read through the PDF of the PLANETARY 27... It's a chunk of serious Mad Science from the early part of the issue. As much as it's nice to see John drawing them all one last time, it's doubly glorious to see Laura Martin working on pages of mine again. (via WarrenEllis.com)

October 5th, '09
(a few days before the final issue was released)
Hell, given that PLANETARY #27 is published mid-week, I'm tempted to keep it all quiet for the week.

People keep asking me for some huge conclusive statement about its completion. For me, it was completed some two and a half years ago, when I wrote the final script. John and Laura have done their usual worldbeating work on the last issue, but I could barely bring myself to proofread it. It's a book I associate with bad times: protracted illnesses, big arguments (I remember John and I once threatening to quit over some idiot move to take Laura off the book, and I vividly remembering arguing for John's job when DC wanted to fire him over his taking on ASTONISHING X-MEN), my physical collapse and months in bed, and my dad's long illness and eventual death. All of these things are intertwined with PLANETARY for me, and make it difficult to enjoy the moment. I'm just glad people won't ask me about it anymore.

Anyway. It's a beautiful-looking book.
