Neuse River Foundation
25th Anniversary

NRF was started in 1980 by 5 New Bern residents concerned about the quality of the water in the Neuse River. The question they asked themselves was this, "What will the Neuse River be like for our grandchildren's children?"

From its origin at the confluence of the Eno River and the Flat River west of Durham, the Neuse River courses over 200 miles to the Pamlico Sound. Its watershed covers over 6000 square miles and drains water from 19 counties. The Neuse River ecosystem supports an amazing array of wildlife species from its freshwater beginning, to its brackish estuary, to its saltwater mouth. NRF is dedicated to the restoration of the river's habitats and clean water for ourselves, our children and for all generations to come.

The Neuse River is the drinking water supply for
over 380,000 people in Wake County.

NRF sponsors two full time RIVERKEEPERS®, one for the Upper Neuse based in Raleigh, and one for the Lower Neuse based in New Bern. They monitor water quality, investigate pollution violations, educate the community on water quality issues and when necessary they help hold polluters accountable. Their work is supported by a small staff and 300 active volunteers: the entire engine is fueled by membership, grants and sponsors.

This year we are celebrating 25 years of environmental victories with the first Riverkeeper Film Festival. We hope to see you there!
