During the year 1861, he enlisted in Company B, 40th Regiment North Carolina Troops, to serve in the armies of the Confederacy during the War Between the States. Company B was known as the McMillan Artillery. William was a prisoner of war at Elmira Federal Prison. The death of William was estimated to be between 1897 and 1899 in Chocowinity Township, Beaufort County, North Carolina.
