"The average age of a soldier in either army was 25. The minimum age for enlistment was 18, but recruiting officers were not particular. Drummer boys as young as nine signed on. Charles E King, musician in 49th Pennsylvania Volunteers, was 12 when he enlisted, and thought to be the youngest combat soldier in the solder. He would be killed at Antietam. Two out of three Confederate soldiers were farmers or farmers' sons. So were half the Union men, and a quarter of them were foreign-born. The average soldier was 5 feet, 8.25 inches tall and weighed 143.5 pounds. A third of southern soldiers could neither read nor write. The chance of dying in combat was one in 65. One in 10 would be wounded. One in 13 would die of disease."

The confederate veterans recorded on the list below have military records that are available from various resources. You may need to consult more than one resource to obtain pertinent details. This grouping of Regiments and Companies allows you to see the names of men who may have served with your person of interest. Although most of these men served under the flag of North Carolina, some of them served under the flag of a different state, namely Georgia and Texas. Georgia dissolved their relationship with the United States on 19 January 1861. Texas dissolved their relationship with the United States on 1 February 1861, which was ratified 23 February 1861. North Carolina dissolved their relationship with the United States on 20 May 1861.
