"When Richmond surrendered, Mrs. George Pickett was in her home. There was a knock on the door, and carrying her infant, she opened it to view a tall, sad faced man in poor fitting clothes. The man asked if this was George Pickett's home, and she replied that it was, but that George wasn't there. The man replied that he knew that, but just wanted to see the place. Then, the man introduced himself as Abraham Lincoln, George's old friend. She then told Lincoln she was George's wife, and that this was his baby. The baby then reached out for Lincoln, who took the child in his arms. While holding the child, the infant opened his mouth, and insisted on giving Lincoln a childish kiss. Upon handing the child back to the mother, the president shook his finger in a playful manner at the child and said, 'Tell your father, the rascal, that I forgive him for the sake of that kiss and those bright eyes.'"
