‭    ‬It is possible to play well without knowing any music theory,‭ ‬but enjoyment of playing and communication with other musicians is much greater when the theory is understood.‭  ‬Anyone who wants to become a professional musician will absolutely need to know theory.

‭    ‬Centuries ago,‭ ‬it was found that knowledge of music theory can be a great help in learning mathematics and science.

‭    ‬One key element of this course is physical models.‭  ‬These are built either with the Zometool kit or with ordinary modeling clay.‭  ‬Building these models increases understanding tremendously.

‭    ‬Students on this course can be playing any instrument or type of music.‭  ‬These days,‭ ‬sheet music is widely available in many forms over the Internet.

‭    ‬Email communications are an important part of the course.‭  ‬Each student is expected to write up results of doing exercises.‭  ‬This also allows for spontaneous questions to be handled quickly.‭  ‬Your teacher does most of the course work between‭ ‬3:30‭ ‬and‭ ‬7:00‭ ‬am,‭ ‬Mountain time.‭  ‬Students who are online at those times may be able to use instant messaging as well.

‭    ‬Course materials are provided by email.‭  ‬These include documents which can be opened by almost all programs and graphics files.‭  ‬Everything has been made compact in order to reduce download times for people with dial-up connections.
