Sod Houses
Back to Iceland     Next

This sod house has been
maintained as a museum.
These various buildings were
interconnected, with separate parts serving different purposes--
storage rooms, animal barns, etc.
More typical dwellings had no
windows, and during winter
whole families slept, ate and
worked in a single lamp lit room.

Stone-lined hallways provide access to the various sections. It was somewhat of a maze.
